anusay 2 POLICE, FIRE AND WATER PERSONNEL COMPLIMENTED Reeve F. V. Harness at the inaugural meeting of Schreiber municipal council, welcomed H. '| H. Fisher and J. S. Caccamo as new members and R. B. Spad- oni and H. J. McParland. Mr. Harness said the water department is in sound financial condition, with a working sur- 'plus. He said a new snow plow should be purchased and sug- gested buying a grader. Council, he said, is satisfied with the police department,: which recently bought radar equipment. The Centennial pro- ject of a community centre in the rink, will shortly be opened 'officially, He suggested a letter of spec- ial commendation to the volun- teer fire brigade whose contri- bution is shown in the decreas- 'ing loss by fire. The reeve proposed that the 'town apply to the CPR to con- vert the grounds in the centre of town, formerly the site of the YMCA, into a park, making it a beauty spot rather than an abandoned lot. Mr. Fisher and Mr. Caccamo thanked the others for their good wishes saying that al- though novices in municipal work they would pay close at- tention and give co-operation as they learned. Mr. McParland asked that a close check be kept on spending in each department by the chairman. He suggested that when the hydro offices are moved into the auditorium of the town hall, it might be fea- sible to move the police office into the upper hall, and consid- eration could be givéy to ren- tol of the former council room. He felt a re-assessment of the town would be profitable. and would like to see Winnipeg St., from Alberta to Columbia, given a hard surface. Mr. Spadoni felt Schreiber should press for the appointment of a district assessor, and for better co-operation between Ter- 'race Bay and Schreiber in all areas for the common good. -- He noted, improved lighting at entrances to the town and felt that centennial decorations might well be used at these points. He urged that the town use every means to press for sewage installation, a move. needed not only as a public health measure, but to attract new industry. Mrs. Oscar Niemi, se wing convener, requested members to, begin making donations for the annual bazaar and conveyed the thanks of Miss Esther Niemi for a small gift presented in appre- éiation of the typing she does throughout each year for the UCW. A donation of $10 was made to Lakehead University Christian TERRACE BAY NEWS Youth Movement. First arrangements for the Valentine tea in February were made. Notice was given of the inter- faith service Jan. 25 in the high Pp school. The world Day of Pray- er will be held in St. Johr's Anglican Church, and Mrs. Rus- sell Macadam will make ar- rangements for the program. Mrs. Waltef Harris and Mrs, Peter McColeman are patients 'in Terrace Bay Hospital. Mrs. Forbes Macadam is conval- escing after a fall in her hom¢ in which she broke her arm. Night school classes in the high school have been resumed: with coffee provided by the home and school association. The 'courses offered, and well- attended, are new mathematics, conversational French, sewing, bookkeeping and typing. Teach- ers are R. Cote, J. P. Tessier, Mrs. S. Petrushak, P. There was an exchange of gifts, and card party. Winners were Mrs. J.D.Bryson, Mrs. C.Sparkes and Mrs.P. Bottomley. The Ladies* Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion met on January 10 with a social evening and exchange of gifts. Mrs. Jack Winters presided for the meeting and Past Pres. Mrs. David Gunter installed Mrs. Jack luke as treasurer and Mrs. Harvey Stevenson as member of the executive. Mrs. Ivan Johnson agreed to convene a monster penny auction in April and Mrs.Gunter and Mrs.Ken Himes will convene a Valentine party. The auxiliary will have a joint meeting with Legion executive to plan the years! program. Mesdames A.C.Rigelsford, Neil Ross, and Lloyd Small will be named as February lunch convenors. The Art Institute of Ontario is sending its director, Paul Bennett, B.A., BeS., MEd. on a tour across Ontario bringing es collection of valuable paintings. He will be in Schreiber on February 7 and The Schreiber Art Club will sponsor the occasion which will be held in the high school at 8 p.m. and open to the public. The high school students will attend the showing Tuesday afternoon, February 7. On tour last year Mr.Bennett carried a painting entitled "Grandmother and Child" which evoked much comment and discussion from his audiences, which he encourages. This _one picture was so successful in this regard that Mr. Bennett-has collected ten paintings in the same theme by well known Canadian artists. to many thousands of dollars. art exhibits were viewed by more than 250,000.
