ROSSPORT NEWS CURLING ACTIVITIES PLANNED An opening bonspiel fo be held when the ice is ready was planned when club members met for a general meeting on Sunday evening. President Anne Todesco welcomed members and wished them an enjoy- able time in the season activities. The minutes were approved as read by Secretary Joyce Yandon. Treas- urer C.Todesco presented a very satisfactory financial statement showing that $359.43 had been spent on repairs, supplies and prizes during the past season and a substantial bank balance remained to assist in current maintenance. Accounts were passed for payment. A report on interior and exterior painting, repairs and fuel was given by the president. It was decided to hire someone to complete painting the outside of the rink in the spring. All old parts of seats in the observ- ation room are to be taken to the garbage dump as it will be cheaper and less work to re-upholster the existing seats. Mac Hubelit offered to take care of the ice making for a nominal fee. Members decided to keep the membership fees the same as last season. Membership tickets were available at the meeting and can be purchased from Mrs. Joyce Yandon or Chas. Todesco at anytime. This type of bid is very useful if the opposi- tion is vulnerable and if their strength is divided between the two hands. South looked again at his heart suit and decided his side should have the bid. North's raise to game is excel- lent as he has two outside aces and a possible club ruff for partner. East overtaking and returning the suit showing a doubleton, West wins the second club and leads his knave at trick three. South, a keen player, recognizes the doubleton in East and sees a definite. loser in diamonds later on. A ruff on the board would only be overruffed by East at trick three whereas the low diamond rids his hands of a potential loser. The general term for this play is Loser-on- Loser and this example is a form called _ the transferred ruff as South is transferring a potential loser to a later ruffing situation.
