Deliberations take place in an informal atmosphere apart from the Courtroom and as many of the witnesses appearing on the Bill of Indictment as necessary are interviewed by the Jury until a decision of yes (' True Bill") or no ("No Bill") is reached by majority vote. A "No Bill", however, cannot be returned unless all of the wit- nesses have been heard. On returning a "True Bill", the accused goes on trial and is then judged aie or not by the Petit Jury. L E AG U E S r The ue ei Grand Jury is not required during the hearing of any of the cases called to now being organized trial and it is dismissed on completion of its duties. The Petit Jury The panel of Petit Jurors is usually made up of sixty or more Jurors from which, in criminal cases, twelve are chosen by lot to serve on each case called. It is the responsibility of each member to listen to the testimony presented by both the Crown and the Defence during the trial and to judge the ac- cused guilty or not. The unanimous vote of the Petit Jury is required before the verdict can be returned. The Judge, having considered the evi- dence and heard the verdict, then decides any necessary penalty. Jury duty is compulsory for men who are summon- ed but women, if they choose, can claim exemp- tion. It is, however, an oe and a valauble ex- perience. FOR AGE GROUPS 10 TO 21...
