The Ontario Medical Association claims the feder- al government's proposed medicare program represents political blackmail against Ontario. In a letter to Prime Minister Robarts, O.M.A. president Dr.R.M.Matthews says the federal govern- ment is applying coercion to Ontario to participate in } the plan. "The means of coercion to be applied has now been headlined, without shame, in very simple terms and specifically addressed to Ontario: 'Why not come to the party? You are going to pay for it anyway'," Dr.Matthews wrote. "We do not wish to comment on the ethics of political blackmail; this is not our field," the letter added. "But as a profession whose services are involved, we must make our posi- tion clear." The letter suggests that further govergment expen~ ditures on health should be directed to the fields of research, mental health, training of personnel and the provision of drugs to the financially needy. NOTE:- Is there a parallel on a local level when a municipality is assessed thousands of dollars toward the building and maintenance. of a home for the aged when the municipality does not wish to participate .?
