Only you can prevent forest fires Serving the District May 19, 1966 HIGHSCHOOL EXPANSION RECEIVES SET-BACK Notice has been given by the Terrace Bay High School Board that the expansion plan which has been | under way for two and one half years has been can-_ | celled on the recommendation of the Department of * | Education. At a public meeting held Friday evening to ex- plain the change of plans, chairman A.Chisholm presented a chronology of events leading to the present decision. lt was in September 1963 that recommendations were received from the Department of Education that the Board institute a four-year Arts and Science | Course with an Industrial Arts option. Over the next eighteen months several meetings took place between the Board and Department and district rep- resentatives, until in April 1965 the Municipal Council gave its full approval and support and an architect was hired to prepare building plans. In September 1965 the plans were approved for legislative grants and the following month the cur- riculum was discussed along recommendations sug- gested by the Department of Education. The first rumbles of approaching trouble were heard in December last year when a letter was re- ceived from the Department of Education pointing out that it was unlikely that a district could support two four year courses unless enrollment exceeded 500 students. Reassured by both the Department of Education and the District Inspector, the High School Board disregarded the rumour that Schreiber was in- terested in a four-year Business and Commerce Course and staff was hired for September 1966, in- cluding an Industrial Arts specialist. Following approval by the Department of Education, tenders were called for and opened by the Board and the. architects on April 18th, 1966. On April 19th a letter was received from the Dis- trict Inspector confirming that Schreiber High School Board was going ahead with plans for a four-year Business and Commerce Course with Home Economics. Despite strong protest from the Board and a meeting with the Assistant Deputy Minister of Education the net result was a recommendation that all Terrace Bay's plans be held over for at.least a year so that the educational picture of the whole district may be studied and assessed in the best interests of the needs of the students.
