Vol. 8, No.49 LIVELY TOWN HALL MEETING HELD LAST WEEK Last Thursday night the Terrace Bay Chamber of Commerce sponsored its annual Town Hall Night when candidates for municipal office were given an opportunity to present their view to those at- tending. The meeting, held in the large meeting room of the Recreation Centre was chaired by N .Cornthwaite and standing room only prevailed, at least for part of the evening. Following an explanation of procedure nominees for Council were given two minutes each to address the gathering and five minutes were given to each of the nominees for Reeve. D.Desrosier and R.Sinotte were not heard from as they were unable to attend. Questions: from the floor covered many varied topics - varying from High School, Municipal Pen- sion Plan, Recreation costs, day light saving, library board, town clerk, applications for building lots, chlorination, and fluoridation of water. Incumbent W.Adamo and candidate (councillor) V .Thompson gave concise, clear answers. Mill Manager J.A.Ferrier spoke before the meet- ing adjourned, stating that he felt it had been a very healthy meeting, particularly so since so many other important events were scheduled for the same evening. He pointed out the need for the civic minded to take office as the town cannot continue to function efficiently unless the township Council, the three school boards and the recreation associa- tion have proper direction. He called for a vote of thanks to all past members of the five organiza- tions mentioned and closed with the hope that, when duty called again, consideration would be given to accepting. This is none too soon, if need can be measured by the amount of agitation for improved counselling and the number of panel discussions and speeches on the subject that au- diences have sat through in the last few years. This is not to say that much has not been done and is not being done. There are dedicated and skilled people at work. But there is a problem of dropouts in high schools continued page 8 Serving the District December 9, 1965 ELECTED REEVE FOR ANOTHER TERM MORE CAST VOTE THAN LAST YEAR Sixty-five percent of Terrace Bay's eligible voters turned out to the polls on Monday and the majority, 387, voted to return Wm.Adamo as Reeve for another term. The number of voters who exercised their fran- chise showed an encouraging increase over last year's poor showing when only 420 of an eligible 780 cast a vote. This year 511 of an eligible 788 voted. Sunday movies were rejected when 303 voted "no" against a 204 vote for "yes". The Returning Officer disctosed that very few ballots were spoiled. NOMINATION MEETING WELL ATTENDED Many more attended the second nomination meet- | ing scheduled last Thursday and an election for members of council assured when six nominees were named to fill the three vacant seats. Those nom- inated are G .Ramsey, R.Sinotte, W.Baillie, S. Lundberg, D.Desrosier and K.MacLeod. The date for another election has not yet been set but indications are that it will not be until after | the first of the new year. SALES TALK > In tHE ReEPort of a Chamber of Commerce meeting the other week the subject of store hours and highway signs turned up side by side. The members were seeking combined action on closing stores at a certain hour on a certain night, ana as the next item of business they decided to enlarge the word "Wel- come" on signs at the town limits. The mattets are not unrelated. .
