Vern Snell, Dist.Engineer, Dept .of Highways, praised Schreiber for their refusal to give up the sub- way project despite years of set-back and discourage- ments. David Batchelor, speaking for the Consultant En- gineers firm of Loughlin, Wyllie & Uffner, said the project was a particular challenge to the engineers since the railway line above it carried transcontin - ental traffic and had to be kept in use during con- struction. Many ingenious devices were used, one (well-remembered by townspeople) was sinking four rows of piling to hold beams across. Pre-fab abut- ments were made on the site and, in a relatively short time the tracks were lifted and replaced and normal traffic resumed. The Hon.George Wardrope first offered the greet- ings of Hon.John Robarts and went on to say he was happy at any time to come to Schreiber and most certainly rejoiced with them on this occasion, know- ing the subway represented not only a safety factor but a convenience. Through thirty-five years of friendship with Schreiber he had the utmost respect for its citizens who, with limited resources, fought unceasingly through frustration and discouragement to better their town. The hallmark of Schreiber, said Mr.Wardrope, was its abi lity to unite at a mo~ ment's notice in a common cause, a place where life was still lived with concern for others. He mentioned the tourist trade and the increased mining develop- ment which is adding to Schreiber's future. Following a cocktail hour in the town hall some fif ty guests went to a banquet served in the United Church Hall. Mr.Harness was again the chairman, voicing the regrets of Douglas Fisher, M.P., and Thunder Bay Harbor Construction Co. in being un- able to attend the ceremonies. The day was a double occasion for Reeve Harness whose birthday was toast- ed in song. Mr.Harness thanked R.B.Spadoni for the gift to the town of golden shears used to cut the ceremonial ribbon. He said the first definite steps toward the subway construction were taken in 1959 when W.E. D'Arcy was Reeve. Among the councillors working with him were George Gordon, Jack Caccamo, September 9, 1965 Mrs.Inez McCuaig and J.M.McGrath. The latter, with P.J.Guina, N.J.Jolicoeur and Harold McPar- land, form the present Council. CPR Divisional Engineer, Charles Pike, commended the town on completion of the underpass, knowing the long study which had been required to accomplish it. John Wyllie said that none of the many large similar projects undertaken by his firm brought the gratification of those in small towns where every citi- zen joined in rejoicing at its completion. W.E.D'Arcy went back to the many refusals en- countered from various departments when Council first attempted to have the old subway replaced. He paid tribute to the ever-ready advice and encouragement of Earle Smith, former district engineer of the Dept. of Highways, and later of Vern Snell. It was also, he said, a particular pl easure to have Lesley Milks, a Schreib er native and neighbour, now with the D. O.H., working on the project and indeed it was from a suggestion by Mr.Milks that a certain successful approach was made by Council. He also thanked the Hon.Geo.Wardrope for his encouragement and prac- tical assistance which, on one occasion, gave Mr. D'Arcy the personal interview with a departmental Head which turned the tide of opinion in favour of the new subway. Mr.L.R.McCuaig introduced guest speaker Hon. G .Wardrope and Reeve Harness introduced the others. During the ceremonies bouquess of roses were pre- sented to Mrs.Harness, Mrs.Wardrope and Mrs.Lester McCuaig by Kathy and Karen Guina and Debra Joli- coeur. Sets of Souvenir glasses commemorating the occa- sion were presented by Councillors J.P:.Guina, N. J.Jolicoeur and Harold McParland to Mr.Wardrope, Mr.D'Arcy, Geo.Gordon, V.Snell, .L.Looney, L. Milks, G.Smith, C.Pike, V.E.Everitt, J.Wyllie, D.C .Batchelor and Mrs.Lester McCuaig. It was Mrs. McCuaig's father, the late Alex McGregor who, when Reeve of the town, secured the first subway for Schreiber, stated Mr.Harness.
