Page 4 THE NEWS July 15, 1965 BRIEF TO SELECT COMMITTEE (Continued from P.1) promoting youth activities, the following recommen- dations were made: EDUCATIONAL Whereas vocation and occupational facilities are al- most non-existent in small communities; Whereas the cost of providing facilities of this type is prohibitive in communities where the assessment is very low in comparison to industrialized areas; Whereas building and facility costs are higher in Northwestern Ontario and maintenance costs are also higher; Be it resolved that the grant structure be changed in such a way that the communities with lower assess- ments receive a higher percentage grant for facility expansion than communities with greater assessments. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Whereas there are very limited job opportunities for local youth in the smaller, scattered communities of Northwestern Ontario; Be it resolved that where Junior Rangers are used in Provincial Parks, that local boys have first opportunit at such jobs; Be it resolved that the Department of Lands and For- ests lower its age requirement from I7 to I6 or |5 years, thereby giving this younger group a chance at summer employment; Be it also resolved that work in small communities for the 14-16 year age group be made available through local municipal offices.
