Vol. 8, No.28 Monts. b Serving the district July 15, 1965 DISTRICT HOME FOR AGED CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECT For some time now passing reference has been made to a proposed District Home for the Aged. Sixteen municipalities were invited to participate and a one- | half majority was needed to validate the proposal . Terrace Bay was one of four municipalities who de- cided they did not want to participate. The others are Red Rock, Marathon and Manitouwadge. However, the provincial government decided to go ahead with the home and legislation was passed to this effect. Here comes the rub! The home is a district home and, even though a town or improve ment district does not want to participate in the plan residents of such a dissenting municipality still have to pay an assessment for the home. In the case of the four municipalites involved industry raises their assessment to a high levet. Since the assessment is to be based on local assessment values the tax for support of the home will be much higher in these municipalites than in others with a lower assessment. Reeve Adamo, in company with representatives from Marathon, Manitouwadge and Red Rock recent- ly interviewed the Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Minister of Welfare in Toronto and was told flatly that Terrace Bay must support the Home whether they want to or not. This sounds like.a dictatorship to these four municipalities where the average age is well below that of those in need of such a home and they are prepared to fight with every means at their command. Also, the fact that the assessment is not on a per capita basis is being questioned NORTH SHORE MINOR FASTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Terrace Bay hosted the North Shore Minor Fastball Championships last week. Communities represented were Marathon, Red Rock and Terrace Bay. Mara- thon was the big winner of the day, winning two championships . NORTH SHORE 1965 MINOR FASTBALL CHAMPIONS Boys - I6and under = --- --- Red Rock Boys - 12 and under --- ~--~- Marathon Girls - 16 and under --- ----- Terrace Bay Girls - 12 and under --- --- Marathon In the Boys' 16 and under division, Red Rock blank ed Marathon 6 - 0 in the first game and then went on to defeat Terrace Bay 16 - 11. The Marathon 12 and under team dumped Terrace Bay 29 - 5 and knocked out Red Rock 16 - 5 to win the 12 and under cham- pionship, Terrace Bay's only championship came in the girls' 16 and under class. Our K.C. 9 .girls' fastball team copped the laurels in this division with a narrow victory, 17 - 16, in their first game with Marathon. In the final game with Red Rock the Terrace Bay girls posted an easy victory over Red Rock with a score of 22 - 4. Cheryl Moore was the win- ning pitcher in both games. Linda Dakin and Lynne Simmer played standout fastball with their heavy hitting and fielding. Marathon wrapped up its second title in the girls' 12 and under age group. Marathon defeated Red Rock 26 - 16 in the opener and Terrace Bay in the final by a score of 21 - 19. Visiting teams were treated to chocolate milk, swimming and roller skating. CAR HITS MOOSE ON HIGHWAY Early Sunday afternoon a car driven by Raymond Levesque of Ville La Salle, Quebec struck a moose three miles west of Schreiber. The occupants of the auto were taken to Terrace Bay Hospital where Mr. Levesque received twenty-three stitches and his wife and three children were treated for scratches and bruises. A local resident, Mrs. Yvonne Vienneau, invited the family to her home for the night and assistance was given to them by Mrs.Vienneau's neighbours.
