Most people, however, make the game a good deal tougher 'than it has to be simply because they don't take the trouble to learn the fundamentals of hitting the ball. Of course many are satisfied to enjoy the exercise, fresh air and the challenge. However, a large num- ber take the game seriously and strive to improve with each outing. For these people we will endea- vour to insert a golf tip in this column every week. The majority of beginners handicap themselves by not learning the proper grip, the most important part of the golf swing. They don't understand where their feet should be placed on the various shots, how their shoulders and hips should operate, or how to make use of their weight--or lack of it. As a result, they seldom improve no matter how diligently they practice. They don't improve because, having failed to learn the fundamentals properly, they groove all the bad habits of their game until every clumsy idio- syncrasy becomes second nature, until--in other words=-they are beyond all help. Get the funda- mentals straight in the beginning and improvement will come as a matter of course. Check your grip with your Pro and be assured that your grip is correct for you. Tournament results for last week were as follows:- Low Net Bob Adamo - Low Gross, A. Pattison and R.Deavis (tie) - High Hole, Wm.Duncan = Low Hole, Vic Timpano and Bill Hanley (tie). As mentioned in this column before, handicaps.are being de- termined from these tournaments. The advantage in knowing your handicap is to be able to measure any progress in your playing and to compete in any handicap tour- nament. Later on in the season larger . tournaments will be held and any one with an approved handicap will be able to compete with players of much greater skill.
