THE Photo by Inez McCuaig COUPLE CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING Mr.and Mrs.Albert Smith, whose marriage took place in Port Arthur, celebrated their Golden wed- ding at a reception in their home on May 29. Born in England, Mr.Smith came to Schreiber in 1912 and Mrs. Smith, nee Maggie Hawker, came with her parents in 1907 from Darbyshire, England, her birthplace. Mr.Smith retired from the CPR service as locomotive engineer in 1955. The Smith's have four daughters, Camilla, Mrs. L.Poirier of Sudbury, Dody, Mrs. Bill Kirkpatrick of Schreiber, Miss Peggy Smith of Nipigon and Nellie, Mrs.Don Stewart of Terrace Bay. There are eight grand children. Mrs .Kirkpatrick, Miss Smith and Mrs .Stewart welcomed the many callers, with their parents, and pouring tea for the occasion were Mrs .George Duncan and Mrs.H.Welbourne, Mrs.J.Corbett and Mrs.R.Winters. The Servitors were Mesdames A. Gordon, C .Boon, C .Duggan and H.Stewart with Chris Stewart and Shelby Kirkpatrick in charge of the guest book . A novel money cake made of fluted bills was presented by their friends to the happy couple and a family dinner ended the occasion. Guests from out of town attending the reception included Mr.and Mrs.Bill Hawker and son Billy of Ft William, Miss Peggy Smith and Miss Hazel Smart of Nipigon and Mrs .Ella Kirkpatrick of Hur- kett. MESSENGERS" PICNIC LOTS OF FUN The Messengers, the youngest group in the United Church, were delighted with the wind-up party planned by their leaders this year. They were taken on a hike to a play spot beside the creek running out of Cooks Lake. The road, never straightened to oblige cars, is a series of sharp curves around which, to any child, lies adventure. The young- sters' pleasure was typified in the remark of a small lad who after the affair said "Well! Here we are, back from OUR incredible journey." Among the awards presented were--for perfect attendance--to Wendy and Debby Jones, Maureen Hencher, Bryer McKenzie, Debby Smith and Kathy Burns and others--for memory work-~ were given to Jane Davis, Debby McCanna, Bryer McKenzie, Maureen Hencher, Lynn Drake .. Cont'd. P.9 NEWS Beaver Lodge #753, ladies auxiliary to the B.of L.F., welcomed their second vice president, Alma Nobel, on her official visit at a dinner meeting held in Mrs.Ted Wilson's home. Mrs.Paul Huminicki president, formally welcomed the guest. Miss Mary Cosgrove of Niagara-on-the Lake, was also a visitor at the dinner. P.J.(Jim) McCuaig is in Toronto this week taking a course with Bell Telephone. On his return Jim will be a despatcher in the Fort William Bell office. Jim's gain in promotion is a loss to the Schreiber High School Cadet Corp. for, as Lieut .Instructor, he has trained many corps here and last year was on loan by Bell to act as instructor at a cadet camp in eastern Ontario. Mr .and Mrs .Russell Campbell are in Vancouver to attend the funeral of Stanley Sinclair, Mrs. Campbell's brother-in-law, whose death occurred on June 5. Mr.Sinclair recently retired from the RCN after serving 20 years and is well-known in Schreiber where he often visited before and after his marriage to Ruth Bolan. Ruth's parents, Mr. and Mrs.T.Bolan, are with her, having gone when they received word a few weeks ago that he was fatally ill. Mrs.George Birch is in Cranmore, Alta. to visit her daughter Helen, Mrs.Paul Krizan and family. J.D.(Jimmy) Bryson is a patient in Port Arthur General Hospital. Mrs.Bryson accompanied her husband who was driven up by Mrs.Jack Bryson. UNITED CHURCH WOMEN MEET The United Church Women held their last meet- ing before summer recess, starting with dinner served in the Anglican Church Hall and ending with a social evening. Following dinner the members adjourned to their own Church Hall where Mrs .T.P.Whent presided for the meeting. Mrs.Alec Gordon read the Scripture passage and Mrs .Bill Whent was pianist. A donation to the Senior Citizens' Home at Pilot Mound, Man., was acknowledged. Mrs.Nelson Smith accepted convenorship of the summer tourist baking project which starts in July. Mrs .Forbes Macadam thanked those who contribu- ted to recent quilts sent out by the sewing commit- tee, adding that one was completed and another is in the making, for brides of this month. Plans were made to serve two wedding dinners and receptions; Mrs.Bill Gerow will convene the first reception and Mrs.T.P.Whent the dinner, with Mrs. Oscar Laine and Mrs .Russell Macadam sharing. con- venorship of the dinner and reception for the second wedding. Rev .McNally of Marathon sent a report concern- ing allocations. On motion it was decided that, as of now, the church dishes will not be rented for any private function, but will be rented to organ- izations. The church chairs will be subject to the above rental conditions, but may be loaned to any church member . In the absence of Rev.Muldrew the morning ser- vice was taken by Chas. Pike and D.Hencher.
