NURSES HOLD ANNUAL MEETING On Monday evening at the Hotel Terrace nurses from Heron Bay, Marathon, Red Rock, Nipigon, Schreiber and Terrace Bay held their annual dinner. Betty Cruickshank, acting chairman of the local nurses, had informal introductions amongst members and Vivian Rapke said Grace. Following the dinner the Men's Choir, directed by Bert Lohr and accompanied on the piano by Brian Hubelit, delighted the nurses with several selections, The Happy Wanderer being the favorite. The guest speaker, Mrs.Margaret Paige, past pres- ident of the R.N.A.O., and nursing director of the Health Unit of Port Arthur and District, was in- troduced by Pat Buck, hospital Supervisor . Before going into her subject Mrs.Paige mentioned items of interest on the province-wide study of nurs- ing and the basic principals of the proposed new structure. On collective bargaining, Mrs.Paige stated that, according to the drafted Act, the right _ to strike was revoked and arbitration preferred. TRAVELLING ART EXHIBIT HERE MAY 22ND Imperial Oil Graphics will be on display Saturday -- afternoon from | - 5 p.m. and 2 - 7 in the evening at the Arts Centre, Terrace Bay. RED CROSS LEADER PATROL COURSE Applicants from any community conducting or planning to conduct a Swimming and Water Safety programme are welcome to attend a Red Cross Leader Patrol Course being held in Red Rock on Friday, June 25th to Tuesday, June 29 th. COMPULSORY VEHICLE INSPECTION STARTED (Toronto) - The Hon.Irwin Haskett, Ontario Minis- ter of Transport, announced that, in the interests of | highway safety a new programme of compulsory ve- hicle inspection was introduced on Monday, in co-operation with the Ontario Provincial Police. Mobile safety check units will be set up at road- side weigh scales of the Dept .of Transport in Eastern and Southern Ontario and the police will direct passing traffic into the scale areas. The first loca- tions will be on Highway #7, West of Perth and Highway #5 West of Cooksville. This is a three part programme in which the police will (1) Examine drivers' lic enses - (2) examine in- surance certificates of drivers or alternatively, evi- dence th at payment has been made to the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund and (3) Department of Transport personnel will make a 38-point safety check of each car.
