ANGUS FRASER SWORN IN AS COUNCILLOR Angus Fraser took the Oath of Office and Alleg- iance to be sworn in at Tuesday's meeting as a member of the Town Council of Terrace Bay by Secretary, F.W.Strutt. Councillor Fraser was elected by Council to replace Councillor Kolody who has left Terrace Bay. Correspondence from Dr.W.C.MacPherson of the Port Arthur District Health Unit indicated he would be in Schreiber May I3 and 14, at which time he would meet with Council. Council was informed the Unit's cost was $1.34 per capita per day. Storage space in the American Builders section of the Armoury Building was offered to the Town- ship by Kimberly-Clark for the purpose of a town- site storage area. There would be no.charge but storage would be at the owner's risk. This offer would be utilized for Bush Fire Control equipment. An enquiry was forwarded to a previous appli- cant for the position of dogcatcher. British Amer- ican Oil Company were informed Hydro power had been disconnected at Millway motors and that a deposit of $100 would be required fe connect th e service. The Public School Board ake the attention of Council to the poor drainage in spring and fall on the ballfield between the Highschool and Pub- lic School. Not only was this considered a hazard to little children, but it aggravated the dirt problems in the schools. Council is consider- ing various means of installing the necessary. storm sewer . Residents with property adjacent to Drew Avenue between Laurier and Hudson, G.Burhmann, T. Latour, A.Pattison and A.Drexler petitioned for landscaping to this area, pledging maintenance once completed. This was to be taken into con- sideration. A request for eae following his depart- ure was received from John Warfield. This had been attended to. Recommendations were submit- ted by W.Farrell concerning the proposed $35,000 extension to Lakeview Drive. Correspondence from A.Chisholm, chairman of the Highschool Board noted Council's agreement to issue debentures in the amount of $20,000 for the purchase of two school houses, and a further $157,000 for addition to the School building. This must be passed by the Department of Educa- tion and when final approval of the plans has been made the Highschool Board would make. a formal ' presentation. ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Ontario Pulp and Paper Makers' Safety Association was held in Ottawa on April 26th and 27th. Attending as delegates from the Kimb erly-Clark Pulp and Paper Company in | Terrace Bay were John Ferrier, Mill Manager; Verl Thompson, Safety Co-ordinator; and Russell Stevens, Steam Plant Tour Foreman. This year's meeting was particularly significant in that the association is celebrating its Golden Anniversary . Verl Thompson was one of three Kimberly-Clark speakers at the meeting. The others were Grant Puttock, Logging Superintendent from Longlac, and Dr. Asselstine, Medical Director from Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, Kapuskasing. Mr .Thompson's presentation was titled 'Planning Today for the Challenge of Tomorrow'. He stated that the Pulp and Paper industry has a comparatively good record in the field of accident prevention byt that there is still room for improvement. He went on to say that "during the past five years, 42 em- ployees were killed and last year we paid a three million dollar assessment to the Workmens' Compen- sation Board. The continued reduction, with the ultimate elimination of industrial injuries and their associated cost, is our challenge for tomorrow:." His many suggestions for meeting this challenge were well received by the delegates present. There were twelve Kimberly-Clark' delegates in attendance, including Mr.George L.Carruthers, President, Kimberly-Clark Canadian Operations, and Mr.Joe Wig, Vice-President and General Man- ager of Kimberly-Clark Pulp and Paper Compan y Limited.
