Mr.Sanford Chicoine, Deputy Knight, awarded the Junior prizes to Doug Crosby of Marathon and second place to Denise Harvey of Red Rock. Held annually by St.Edwards Council No.3554 of the Knights of Columbus, the competition is between the district Highschools, the seventh annual being in Terrace Bay. Mr.Pat Guina was Master of Ceremon- ies for the contest, welcoming the students and friend and introducing the panel of judges: Mrs.lsabel Mars of Terrace Bay, Mr.Carlo Catterello of Red Rock and Mr.Marvin Steen of Marathon. Mr.Rene Gaudet, Youth Activity Chairman, had been in charge of the event. In the Junior Division Doug Crosby spoke on "The people of Laos are not a happy people" stating their sufferings were in extremes inconceivable to man and incorporating the work of Dr. Thomas Dooley who had sought to minister to their two afflictions and disease and communism. Denise Harvey, second place winner spoke on "Your vocation in Canada". She stressed the need to pick a happy vocation to last approximately forty years of your life, with the necessary training for either skilled tradesmen or education to fulfill the technicians of industry. Other competitors in this Division were Cora Spadoni of Schreiber whose subject covered The Achievements of the Chinese Republic, dwelling particularly with the past fifteen years and the his- tory of this sleeping giant. "The Path of Truth and Racial Equality over the Mountain of Prejudice" was the subject Gordon Moorey of Schreiber eluci- dated upon and the porblem of all segregation. Russell Evans of Red Rock talked of "The Teenage Driver" whom he considered more prone to delin - quency, the car being a status symbol of speed and success. Claire Belliveau of Terrace Bay stressed the "Need for Higher Education" stating Canada needs trained men and women to become a leading nation. Carole Gaudet's topic was on " Juvenile Delin- quency" which she explained covered everything | from minor offenses to murder. She stressed the up- bringing and the many outside influences affecting juveniles and closed with the thought that all seg- ments of society must combine their efforts to eradi- cate this delinquency.
