« ol. 6 No. 49 COUNCIL QUOTES Reeve J. P. Heenan presided over a full slate of Council Wednesday afternoon in the Municipal Of-: fices, concluding Township business for the month of November. Councillors Wellings, Adamo, Valie quette and Fraser approved the minutes by Secretary W.F. Strutt of the past regular meeting and dis= cussed correspondence. A request from the Terrace Bay Ski Club for ex- tension of electrical power to the ski hill to provide power and night lighting will be investigated for cost with Mr. D. Boudreau, Electrical Superinten- dent. The resignation of E.B. Young as Chairman of the High School Board as of December 31st was accepted and the Board will be requested to appoint another representative. Mrs. E. Evans-Smith's resignation from the Library Board was accepted as she is now a member of the staff. Council will submit names at the next meeting for a replacement on the Board. The Reeve's letter to Mr. J. Phillips, Chairman of the Recreation Committee was read in which he outlined Council's considerations of the Recreational facilities and suggested steps be taken to decom- mercialize it by: (1) discontinue using it for a bus stop (2) remove the tables in the lobby. Further discussions of the three-man appointed committee were to take place in February or March. Coun- cillor Wellings reported on the last meeting of the Recreation Committee when the first recommen- dation of Council had been accepted, to become effective December 10th. The second recommen- dation will be dealt with at a later date. The three man committee was acting only in an advisory capacity. Recreation Account in the amount of $6,316.97 for November was approved for payment. Reeve Heenan proposed that now the swimming pool was paid, the dollar a month collected in mem- berships be applied to Recreation directly in order to reduce the Recreation budget. This was generally agreed upon. Replying to Councillor Fraser's questions on sewagé lagoon work, Councillor Wellings stated about $23,000 had been spent over the past three years and both systems run together. The work was finis~ hed now and would be for sometime to come. In the past if had cost approximately $11,000 a year to keep the tile fields in condition. The Reeve con- firmed they would not have to worry further about tile beds. Councillor Valiquette reported at length on the applicants he and Councillor Fraser had interviewed in Toronto for Police Constable and a further letter was read by the Secretary. Appointments are now under consideration. THOMPSON TOPS TERRACE BAY POLLS A rtéw comer on the municipal scene, Verl Thomp- son, Mill Safety Co-ordinator, tallied the highest vote in Monday's election with 427. This is the highest vote ever given to one candidate in Terrace Bay. 77% of those eligible voted at this election - 600 out of a possible 780. J. Heenan was re-elected Reeve with a 359 vote, defeating H. Billings who received 234 votes. Others elected to Council are W. E. Cavanaugh 360 votes, A. Fraser 283 votes and a tie between W. Adamo and E. R. Brown who both received 259 votes was broken by Clerk-Treasurer W. F. Strutt who, on the toss of a coin, cast a vote in favor of the latter. Both Mr. Brown and Mr. Cavanaugh had made bids for municipal office in 1959 as did two other nominees who failed to place - R. Ostling and P. Romanuk. Valiquette, seeking re-election, got 234 votes. Congratulations are in order to the successful candidates. Congratulations are equally deserved by those candidates who were not elected. In run- ning for office they have show an interest in the affairs of our community. TOWN HALL MEETING Last Thursday night the High School Auditorium was filled to capacity, indicative of the keen in- terest being taken in this year's municipal eléction.
