« COUNCIL QUOTES Reeve W.E. D'Arcy presided for the September council meeting with one ratepayer in attendance. Insurance tenders were opened and coverage for the fire hall and addition given to R.B. Simon. The account re burned out transformer was again tabled until full council is present. Requests for welfare aid to citizens claiming Schreiber residence, were received from Vancouver and Winnipeg, via Toronto. The Dept. of Mines stated the town's request for screenings from stockpile at Sand Lake will be filed. Laughlan, Wylie and Ufnal informed town that soil tests necessary for the subway will be done by H.Q. Golden & Associates. A by-law providing sick benefits for employees on town permanent staff was given three readings. it was decided to put a rental fee of $1.00 per hour, or any part of an hour, for the use of the cesspool pump.owned by the town. Mr. Harness stated he had been advised that steps should be taken at once regarding securing of land for subway site, a formality, but necessary. Mr. Harness also said he had several tanks of- fered which would serve to replace the present cesspool tank and the decision was left in his hands. A repair estimate of $203.58 for #2 truck was accepted. The new tarpaulin for the garbage truck has proved most satisfactory. lt was agreed that, unless the illegal parking at the Roman Catholic Church is immediately dis- continued, the police will begin ticketing for fines. The police were also instructed to deal with owners who have disregarded council's warning re- garding unsightly premises, and the disposal of an outhouse. Westeel will be contacted to inquire if present traffic signs can be replated to standard color since, just before the regulation was changed, the town had acquired some extra supplies of such signs which are regularly replaced owing to damage occurring in various ways. GEORGE WARDROPE SPEAKS Hon. George Wardrope spoke at a well-attended public meeting in the town hall on Saturday evening Accompanying Mr. Wardrope were his wife, Norman Wilson, Harvey Smith, A. Sheveuk, T. Gagliardi and Bob Brown, all of Port Arthur and Toi Seppala of Rossport. J. D. Phillips, was chairman for the occasion and Mr. Wardrope was introduced by Gino Caccamo Continued Award winners at the Taeent Commencement LIBRARY NEWS H.M, Ermel presided for the September meeting of the public library board. The annual rent was paid and a letter of appreciation sent to municipal council for the extensive and handsome remodelling done in the library - the interior completely re- finished in light wood panelling, ceiling lowered andj. new lighting fixtures installed and an arch cut into the back ell. The board was happ: to pass on to council the commerts of the many iourists who make a practice, apparently, of estimating a town by its library, and who exclaimed over the decor and ex- tent of the books carried. Books for the standing library will be ordered and replacements of popular children and juvenile sets as required. A filing cabinet and footstool and other library supplies will be purchased. The plastic book covers will be used at the discretion of Mrs. LeBlanc, librarian. A new hanging sign was ordered for the window indicating the library, since many strangers otherwise seek the HEPC office, misled by their sign. A year's subscription to the Canada Month was re- ceived from an unknown donor. D. L. Sudar, chief co-op librarian, will be asked to make an adjustment on the books mysteriously missing from Schreiber units. This is done so that the units rented will be brought up to full comp= lement. The bookmobile will be in Schreiber on September 25th. Patrons are advised to have co-op books re- turned by that date. One card holder was billed for destroyed book. Outstanding accounts were ordered paid, after Miss Gwen Hadley had presented the financial statement for June, July and August. A BOTTLE DRIVE will be spensored by the Ice Fund Committee on September 19th and 20th.
