Resources to meet these demands totalled 7,087,500 kilowatts. we: i es Seen ya District June 6, 1963 CHANGES MADE IN ADMINISTRATION OF SENIOR MATRICULATION EXAMINATIONS Education Minister William G, Davis has announced several changes in the adminis- "tration of the Ontario Grade 13 Depart- mental Examinations effective over a five- year period, 1963-67. In 1955, 90,209 Grade 13 papers were written and examined; in 1962, the. number was 195, 225; for 1963, the estimate is 228,700. In 1966, the rate of increase may be as great as 50% in one year, Repeated requests from universities and parents concerned have been made for the release of marks at an earlier date than the second week of August. It is the opinion of the Minister that the people of Ontario wish to retain the Grade 13 Departmental Examinations at the present high standard as a uniform basis for the issue of the Secondary School Honour Graduation Diploma and for admission of successful candidates to various forms of post-secondary education. Accordingly, after, very careful consideration of the effect of the proposed changes on all con- cerned, he asks their co-operation as the changes are initiated and modifications are made, The timetable for the Grade 13 Depart- 'mental Examinations in 1963 will be advanced so that the examinations in that grade only will commence on June 3rd, Although this date is one week earlier than the customary ° beginning of these examinations, boards will not lose any attendance grant on behalf of Grade 13. pupils. In order that sufficient time may be available for the usual careful consideration of the papers, associate examiners will be required at earlier dates than usual. English and French markers will be asked to report for duty in Toronto on June, 18th, Markers in other subjects will commence on June 24th or June 25th. Boards and principals are asked to arrange for the release of 1,000 teachers, or one in fifteen, a few days earlier than usual for this important duty. % Aithough the number of Grade 13 subjects may not change, the number of papers to be written will be reduced, (a) Commencing June, 1965, a single paper will be set in each of the languages other than English. (b).Commencing June, 1966, a single paper will be set in Biology. (c) Commencing June, 1967, two papers will be set in Mathe- matics in place of three, This reduction of papers must be preceded by a redistribution of topics in Grades ll, 12, and 13, and in some subjects texts must be prepared to fit the rearranged courses. The proportion of teaching time for the variouf subjects will not be altered as a result of the reduction in the number of papers.
