For the first time in history all ten pro- vinces will join in its observance. The theme chosen this year is "HOW ADOUT: TEACHING?" ~~To honour the teachers of the rrovince and to preserit 'the teaching pro- fession to the students of-Ontario as one of their primary career choices are the aims of the Education Week Committee this year. Teaching is one 'of the most challenging, exciting and rewarding careers a young man or woman can choose. It brings dignity of position in a commmity; it gives the secu- rity of steady employment and provides a comfortable income. It brings the most important reward of all -= the sense of doing' a job that is meaningful and of great purpose, 'It is a job for experts and one to which the best.of our young peapile should be attracted. Between now and 1970 Canada will need » thousands of new qualified teachers in all classrooms from primary school to University; the possibilities within the teaching pro- fession are unlimited for students of high academic and personal qualifications, It may be hackneyed, but it is nevertheless true to say that Canada's future lies in ~ the minds, in the hearts and in the skill | of the teachers in her classrooms. Itts true that more and more young people are preparing to teach, but rising enrol- ments in our schools are creating new open- ings every year. Look at communities you know. Count the eee of new teachers this year. Teaching is a job for experts, In the early grades the teacher needs knowledge in) child development as well as 'a broad back- ground in many subject areas.
