Teen Town should, and must, mean ; more than a Friday night dance, financially successful ventures and commnity projects. This is what youth counsellors are striving for -- to indirectly direct and assist the youth of today toward independence and democratic thinking so that, just as a new nation gains its independence and right to make its own decisions, our youth, too, will lay the foundation for independent, mature thinking through their association with teen town, Youth consellors from Terrace Bay, Red Rock, Atikokan, Fort William, and Cochenour, Ontario attended this concentrated weekend course. Peter Frederickson represented Terrace Bay. The programme included HOW and WHEN to help youth assume their responsibil- ities in the youth club and in the community, how to stimlate programme development within the club, SSirmeliing and referral, skill training in conducti and use of commmity facilities, ST ARTE ACE AE NGS: Nan ce menos HORTICULTURAL SHOW SUCCESS | A new Award stirred the interest of many newcomers to the thrill of *Showtime! when Terrace Bay Horticultural Society presented its Seventh Annual Flower and Vegetable Show last Saturday, August 26th, in the High School Auditorium. The Reeve'ts Award, given to the First Year adult exhibitor with the highest aggregate of points, went to Mrs. Ann Latour and was personally presented by its donor, Reeve John Ferrier, Mr. A.H, Farrow took the high aggregate for the show with a total of 122 points to receive the Wills Nursery Trophy and the Hon. George Wardrope, MP award. The Farrow garden has long been a notable one in the town, a forerunner in a new very attractive commnity; Mrs. Farrow taking the high aggregate last season, work in Terrace Bay is their Test Plots, Here members may secure divisioned plots in a designated section for their extra needs in growing vegetables. An award for the Best Garden Plot was made for the first time this year and went to Louis St. Louis for the best kept and variety of vegetables. He received an 80 lb. bag of Fertilizer courtesy Mount McKay Feed Co, A further coveted Award annually is the Judges! For this she received the Simpsons-Sears Award of Staffordshire Teapot, Cream and Sugar, having previously taken a first in this subject, also the Judges* Award in the Children's Division. es! The Junior Gardeners, with their steadily ! growing membership are out in greater number than their seniors to display their produce and annually consume a larger share in the amazingly wide array of flowers and vegetables, The Horticultural Society's | | Shield for high aggregate in the Junior Gardeners was closely contested this year with Suganne Lemay edging out John MacDonald, the winner last year, by the slim margin of one point. | The Junior Gardens, all sponsored by the | Adult Group, are carefully guided through | | | | ' the summer, with a rotation inspection. once a month in which they are judged on their planting, weeding, thinning and so forth. The points are then totaled by Showtime to determine the Garden Winner as: Junior Albert Cadieux Jr., and Senior Carl Connors, both boys received the Local 665 Internation- al Brotherhood Sulphite Pulp & Paper Mill Workers Trophy presented annually and the Local's gift to Albert of a Timex Watch and to Carl a Parker Pen and Pencil Set.
