j July 20, 1961 MOOSE HUNTING SEASON ANNOUNCED (Ontario Dept.of Lands & Forests) Open seasons for hunting moose have been announced by Ontario Lands & Forests Minister the Hon.J,W.Spooner. Most of the Northern part of Ontario is included in the three- year schedule. Open seasons announced apply to those areas where annual regulation of the seasons is necessary. Few changes have been made from 1960. Rainy River District lying east of Rainy Lake will have .an open season from September 30th to December 23 for residents of Ontario only. Sudbury District lying south of No.17 Highway will be open from November lst to 7th for residents of Ontario only. In the Nipissing District north of the Mattawa River resi- dents only may hunt moose from October 14th to November 25th The area south of the French and Matta- wa Rivers has had moose seasons in 1956 1958 and 1960. In { spite of an ever- increasing kill, the moose herd continues to increase and ex- pand its range. The moose season for residents only will therefore be open . again in 1961, the Minister said. In the past sea- sons, the $26 resi- dent moose-deer licence has been the only one valid for { moose in this sche- dule. In 1961, resi- dents of the province may hunt moose in this area on the $10 resident moose li- cence, The moose and deer seasons will concurrently from November 6th to 18th in the Districts of ~ Parry Sound, Muskoka (except that part of vue townships of Medora and Wood lying east of the C.N.R, line and north of the 16th Concession in the township of Wood), the south part of Nipissing, the Counties of Haliburton, Renfrew, Lanark, and the northern parts of Hastings, Frontenac, Peterborough and Lennox and Addington, the township .of Somerville in Victoria County and Rama and Mara in Ontario County. There will be a moose season on St, Jos- eps island from Nov.20th to 25th inclusive, REsident hunters only may participate and they may NOT use dogs. The purpose of the course is to provide an opportunity for people to learn safe methods for skin and scuba diving and to help them enjoy the sport with skill and confidence. The Course is sponsored by the Quetice Conference and Training Centre and is open to anyone 16 years of age or over who can swim 200 yards, tread water for 5 minutes, swim underwater for 60 feet, retrieve a 10 lb. object from 8 feet of water, and who is in good physi- cal condition. The registration form must be signed by a medical doctor. DEPARTMENT OF LANDS & FORESTS OPEN NEW DISTRICT OFFICE The new Geraldton District office was officially opened on July 10th by the Minister of Lands & Forests, the Hon, J. Wilfrid Spooner. The Minister and other guests for the official opening, including the Hon, George Wardrope, enjoyed a fine noon meal at the Kenogam- isis Staffhouse and at 2.30 the party travelled to Gerald- ton for the official opening. Guest speakers at the official opening included Hon, J.W. Spooner, Minister of Lands and Forests, Hon. George Wardrope, Minister of Reform Institutions, Mayor B, Pressman of Geraldton, George Blanchard, Regional Superintendent of Constr- uction, Department of Public Works and John Dagsvik Jr,, the contractor who constructed the building, After the opening, the building was open for public inspection in the afternoon and evening with everyone commenting on the fine facilities we now have available. Over two hundred citizens inspected the building during this period. Still to be completed is the landscaping around the building which should be completed this summer.
