Singleton and Ruth Fadden, © THUNDER BAY FILM COUNCIL MEETS -Delegates to, the sixth annual meeting of the Northwestern Ontario Film Federation held in Port Arthur were impressed and stimulated by their guest speaker, Mr. Gordon P, Dalzell, M.A, B. Paed., at a dinner given by the Thunder Bay Film Council in May in the Prince Arthur Hotel, Mr. Dalzell, who is Director of Education for Port Arthur Schools, chose as his topic "Education in an Expanding World". He took a hard appraising look at the problems facing educators and called for a rigorous re- shaping.of educational objectives and a raising of standards of achievement expected of today's pupils. "We need to get more achievement out of our pupils at every level and to direct their search for a richer and fuller appreciation of the good things of life. Nobody expects us to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear =- but we should expect to be able to raise a better sow's ear --.and-to make an artistic creation out ofa silk purse", said the speaker. "Educators are expected to teach many new topics, soa great deal that is outdated must now be pruned out of the curriculum, Since Sputnick, there has'been an increased emphasis on science, and that is good, but in the desire to acquire more 'know how! we must not lose sight of the 'know why!, It is important that we re-examine our moral and spiritual values and in erecting.a mountain of knowledge, we must make sure that we keep at the pinnacle a symbol which is in consonance with and control of the base", The speaker' was introduced by Miss Reita Rankin, Librarian of the Fort William Public Library, and he was thanked by Mrs. Astrid Mosbeck of Fort Frances.
