While we in Terrace Bay have been fortunate in that no major fire Catastrophe has disturbed our pleasant lives it is well that. we should be reminded from time to time not to become too complacent. The following open letter to the citizens of Terrace Bay. and district, written by Fire Chief George Maitland, should 'serve as a reminder that, although we have an energetic and well equipped Eire Fighting Unit. fire prevention is still EVERYBODY'S. business, "Dear Friends:- One of the most important documents signed by Governor General Vincent Massey before his retirement early this month! was a Pro- Clamation. designating the week of October 4th to 10th as Fire Prevention'Week through- out Canada, This. Proclamation was not intended to suggest that we restrict our fire prevention efforts) to only one week of the year, but rather that we concentrate every possible effort during that period to inform and edu- cate the public to, the need for special attention to this menace which, as) you know, increases each year with the approach of Winter, The purpose of this letter isi to enlist your. support and the support of your Fire Department in helping to achieve this aim in Terrace Bay. You can help at the cost of only a few minutes of your time and I can assure you that those few minutes will. be among the most. profitable you have .ever spent. Here is what you can do, Come out to the High School .Auditorium on October 9th at 2,15 P.M, and see the school children put on a fire prevention play. You will also see a big display of fire fighting equipment, posters and essays by the school children and see good fire films. Stan Hodgkiss was re-elected President of the Northwestern Federation for the 59/60 term and Frank Sechesky was elected to the pesition of Treasurer which is a new post created since the adoption of a new constitu- tion last spring, dividing the former posi- tion of Secretary-Treasurer, Roy Greer of Port Arthur continues as the Federation Sec- retary. In addition, two other members of the Terrace Bay Club were elected as Committee chairmen, Elmer Persson continues to head up the committee reporting on angling in Lake Superior and the very important project of lamprey control now under way on Lake Superior and its tributory waters. Cliff Wood, as chairman of resolutions will be responsible for the control and pre- sentation of various resolutions to future Zone One meetings, as they are submitted by the various clubs in the Northwestern Feder- ation, Zone One embraces the area from the Man- itoba boundary to White River and there are presently fourteen fish and. game clubs in the Federation representing some 2,100 anglers and hunters. In addition to being President of Zone One, Stan Hodgkiss is presently the lst Vice- President of the parent body, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and is also chairman of the Game Fish committee of the Ontario wide body.
