"TERRACE Bay NEws ete ae ce Circulation Terrace Bay & Schreiber SAFETY AFLOAT The boating season is with us again and the hazards of boating too. This paper has learned of one boating accident on Hayes Lake this year, which fortunately did not have any serious conse- quences. For your safety afloat we print here a few of the "musts" in the rules for boating and fishing as taken from an Ontario provincial publication: 1. KNOW YOUR BOAT - Learn what it will take under all circumstances. Use the right motor: the one recommended on the plate--too much power can damage your boat--may even swamp it! 2. BALANCE YOUR PASSENGERS & BAGGAGE - Distribute their weight from side to side & bow to stern. Don't let the bow lift too high else wind, waves, or a quick turn may react dangerously. 3. AVOID SHARP, FAST TURNS - they're hard on equipment, may send a passenger overboard, or upset the boat. Avoid kicking up swells that could swamp smaller craft or drench their occupants. Don't show off!} 4, AVOID OVERLOADING ~ Neither the number of seats nor their width indicate your boat's safe capacity. Under certain. conditions, in fact, two or three adults may be your peak load. 5. DON'T SKIMP ON LIFE-PRESERVERS or. kapok cushions; there should be one per passenger. Children should WEAR life-preservers in a boat. This isn't sissy--it's just common sense! 6, WHEN BOARDING A BOAT, step into its centre. Avoid changing places except at a dock or along shore. 7. SIT DOWN_IN YOUR BOAT! - Sure, you can bait-cast or fly-cast much easier standing up--but you only increase your chances of taking a dive, losing your expensive tackle, and maybe your life! Even when fishing shallow waters, near shore, learn to fish sitting--or kneeling on the bottom, if in a canoe--thus keeping your centre of gravity low, and your stability high! PORT ARTHUR RED SOX AT TERRACE BAY THIS SUNDAY FOR A DOUBLE HEADER The weatherman has played havoc with scheduled games in the T.B.B.A. league with nearly every week-end game being rained: out. Last week-end the Terrace Bay nine journeyed to Port Arthur to tangle with the winless Dinty's Colonels but didn!t count or: the inclement weather that seemed to prevai.: over all of the Northwestern Ontario region, and once again Old Man Weather was the winner, This week-end we have hopes of fine weather, and will play hosts to the P.A. Red Sox in an afternoon Doubleheader at the ' Hish School Diamond, A double win or a split at least will put our boys up with the: leaders in the loop, and with 18 games stil: 4 ace Bay pitching staff as of Wednesday nite. | we should be in contention for league leade: ship and possibly a spot in the Finals or who knows maybe even the Championship. So let's get out Sunday and cheer the Boys on against this well-balanced Red Sox Club. N. A.
