TELEVISION SAFETY _ Submitted by the Terrace Bay Fire Department. Source - National. Board of Fire Underwriters. The Picture Tube ~ used in television receivers is a highly evacuated bulb with a glass face and metal or glass walls and is continually being stressed with a large crushing force. An atmospheric pressure-of *!..7 pounds is exerted on each square inch of tube surface. When the tube breaks it _ implodes in a violent manner, resulting in -broken glass flying in random directions and possibly through the television protect- ive window. when a picture tube becomes defective, replacement should not be attempt- ed by the user, A warning on all television receivers listed by Underwriters! Laboratories, Inc. reads "High Vacuum Picture Tube is Dangerous to Handle. Refer Servicing to Qualified Service Personnel," _ Television receivers should never be placed on a radiator or other source of heat as some parts of a set might be damaged by continued exposure to tempera- tures encountered under such conditions, IV sets generate considerable heat _ which accumulates dangerously when ventila- tion is cut off. Care should therefore be taken to see that the ventilating openings are kept clear and open. It may be dangerous, for instance, to install a set in a tight cubicle unless it was especially manufactured for such a confined space, Receivers should not be left turned on while unattended. Because of the inherent hazard of electric shock, particular care must be exercised in using a television receiver outdoors.
