Cr tom an Cee Sa yee he ane f Ge ake a a It is true that "any fool can drive fast". But the appellation of fool has no sex, no age limit. A case in point is that of when a driver approached my car from behind (at night) and passed me without benefit of his car's lights. I was not aware of him passing until he was a little ahead of me. If, say, " three or four seconds earlier, I had pulled toward the centre of the road to avoid hitting or to give plenty of room to, some animal, a pedestrian, or a parked car at the road's edge, there could have been a serious accident The lights of the car went on as we neared the next town then it soon pulled up before a cafe. I was not surprised to see a man of about the age of thirty-five step out of the driver's side (he was alone) and go into the cafe, forgetting to turn out his lights which were on bright and aimed at the road. Now, this sort of man was not unlike some "adolesent boys I know who take a noisy pride in the gains of their country's material advancement. They race one another along tie highways and around buildings. They rev their "motors in excess, honk their horns needlessly -.and rarely ever come to a controlled stop. Yes, their cars are powerful. They must not let anyone beat them at the getaway; for the very uncertainty of their unproven strength makes them ashamed to stoop to acts of .kind- ness for fear they will be accused of weakness So it was with the driver who drove with out lights. It was not enough for him that his car's motor, or its prototype, was placed in a test cell so that quirks, if any, would be reflected by intrumentation so the same could be eliminated to ensure the best possible product; that the entire car was put: over a proving ground; and that his car was. fixed with everything it needed at his disposal. No, he had to add, or rather take away, something. He had to try driving at night without lights. This so-called man could be shown by some boys how to drive like a MAN - especially with those thin layers of snow soon to cover the asphalt. There are boys who could tell him that though cars will inevitably slide off the roads under such conditions, a reduction in speed will lessen the number of incidents. There are boys who could tell him that more _ caution should be used where there are pedes-- _ trians, especially youngsters; for as most everyone has read gr heard some place, child- ren aren't careless, they're care-free.
