SOE SHOW Wee ------_-- wie ne 1 AP See The Terrace Bay ; Horticultural Society ee held it's third annual Flower and Vegetable show Saturday, August 24th in the Highschool Auditorium with a bigger 'and better prize list, judged for a larger than ever, number of entries. Mr, Dick Maat of Wills forseri ce held the lofty position of judge of the show which had been co-convened by Vice-President Hugh Brophy and Frank Ginn, Mr. Maat in his Judge's remarks paid many compliments to the show, the presentation and the quality of the items on display, The Wills Narsery Trophy pre- sented by Mr. Maat, went justifiably to Mr. Bob Middaugh , along with many other prizes Hor individual exhibits, Mr. Maat said he took. great pleasure in presenting young Miss Ainsley Middaugh with the Judges Award on the basis of her scrap book containing her collection of wild flowers, in the Junior Division. Ainsley received Five Dollars donated by Lakehead Freightways, Introduced by the Show Chairman Hugh | 'Brophy, President Ab. Farrow gave his address briefly and presented the new Junior Trophy for annual competition to Billy Shivas.. The. Junior Garden Club were well-+ sponsored in their initiation and were also the receivers of two lovely trophies from the International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, Local 665 up for annual competition with two miniature trophies to be retained by the winner from Leon Checkryn. Presenting these trophies on behalf of Local 665, Vice-President Allan Valiquette congratulated Holly Berndtsson and Michael MacDonald for their steadfast gardening efforts which had won them this prize, Holly won in the 8 to 11 age group while Michael placed first in the 12 to 16 age. Second prize in these classes were shares in the Terrace Bay Community Credit Union presented by Fred McMillan and received by Leon Checkryn Jr...in the.8 to 1] age group and Bob Hopper in the 12 to 16 class, Third prizes were gift certificates from the Hudson's Bay Company presented by Vern Hopper to Ainsley Middaugh and Paul Heenan. Completing the prizes of the Junior Club, Mr, Harry Goodfellow their executive director presenting the following with prizes of One Dollar each all. donated by the Terrace (cont'd next col.) P, 40 Kiwanis Club: David Roberts first in Beas; Jeanne Stuart first in Beets; Michael MacDonald first with carrots; Billy Shi vas first with lettuce; Billy Shivas first with peas and Bruce Whitfield first with potatoes. In Class two Ainsley Middaugh received first fa her collection of Wild Flowers, Beth Hopper for collection of annuals and Bob Hopper first for collection of Vegetables, Class three the posters, - won by Jean Hopper, Class four witnessed Bob Hopper winning again this time for his bird house, The Senior Frize List presented by Hugh Brophy went to the' following: Three shrubs each from Plum.Grove Nurseries to Mrs, W.Stachiw for sweet peas, one colour; again to Mrs, W, Stachiw for sweet peas mixed; Ab Farrow for his Batchelor Buttons, Mrs, Stachiw repeated for her Galendulas; Mrs. A. Connors for Marigolds, R, Middaugh for Nasturtiums; Ab Farrow for pansies, Mrs. L. Homper for single petunias; Mrs, Stachiw for salvia. 'From Downham Nurseries Mrs, Stachiw received . Five Dollars in Shrubs for her stocks; Mrs, R. Boyle received three shrubs from Plum Grove Nurseries for her Sweet Williams and R. Middaugh received a dollar from the CU. D. Howe donation for his poppies. In Class two of Dahlias afd Gladiolus One Dollar was received by Mrs. L. Hooper from Bill Morrow Co., for her single Dahlias; One Dollar went to Ab Farrow from Bill Morrow Co., for his Pon Pons; One Dollar again to Ab Farrow from Longlac Pulp and Paper Company for Exhib- ition Dahlias, Five Dollars in Shrubs was won by Mrs. R. Cotton from Downham's Nurseries for the best Gladiola in the Show; Three Dollars in Bulbs from Ferncliff Gardens went to Mrs, R. Cotton for the Giant Named Gladiola; and Ab Farrow. received One Dollar from C..D. Howe for the Decoratie-Dahlia class. Class three 'the collection of Annuals went to R. Middaugh who received a Silver Rose Bowl from Brayshaw Steel Limited; and Ab Farrow was the winner of a load of top soil for his collection of roses, donated by the Improve- ment District of Terrace Bay-~ - Class four was for Floral arrangements and Mrs. L. Hopper won One Dollar for her arrange- ment for se against a wall;. R. Middaugh won One Dollar for arrangement for a coffee table; all donated by Bill Morrow Company; and R.
