ass © MERCURIES TOO TOUGH Terrace Bay's hockey season came to an end Sunday when Marathon defeated our Superiors 8 --- 3 to win the play-off champ- ionship. As was expected the Mercuries depth paid off in this series and while they won it, they certainly knew they were in a battle. For the Superiors this game ended a successful season of hockey, a season which saw them get into the final play-offs for the first time. Terrace Bay had more than their share of injuries during the season and the bad luck continued through the play-offs. Losing such key men as Weaver and Whalen is too much of a blow from which to recover and had they been on the ice, the result might have been different. However, let's not take anything away from Marathon. They're a fine team with lots of scoring balance, a good defense and lots of spirit and hustle, a tough club to beat anytime. Our hat is off to both clubs for giving us six games of top flite hockey. Thursday's game in Marathon was perhaps the deciding battle of the series. Terrace Bay had to win this one, but Mara- thon took an early lead and never permitted the Superiors to catch up. The ice was soft and when you get a good lead on that kind of ice against the Superiors, its tough to win. Marathon won that game 7-h which gaye them a commanding lead in the series, Sunday's game started out as Terrace Bay's game but it certainly didn't end that way. The contest was really two games. For the first half it was all Terrace Bay, but the second was all Marathon, The only trouble was that Marathon scored more goals in their half of the game, The Mercuries spotted Terrace Bay a 3 goal lead on goals by Kenney (1) and Moro (2), then came roaring back like the champ- ions they are to score 8 straight goals, Nothing the Superiors did slowed the Mercury (cont'd next col.) (cont'd from prev. col.) attack as at times they scored with ridiculous ease, The final score of 8-3 just about indicated the difference between these two clubs last Sunday, Stachiw, Kenney, Moro and Marv Osmar looked good in this losing cause while Ally LeBlanc, Cox and the entire Marathon defense were the big guns in their victory. So that wraps up another season of hockey. League champions last year, play-off finalists this year and who knows, if we keep improving we should be play-off champs next year. With a couple of additions in the right spots, we could go all the way next season. We'll just have to sit and hope for now as next year is a long way off. Editor' Note: This write-up about N.S.H.L. activities will probably be the last one by the Terrace Bay Amateur Hockey Association's Publicity Chairman, Glen Sievers. Glen took over the duties somewhere along about half way through the season. At the end of March Glen will be leaving for south of the border. On behalf of the Terrace Bay hockey fans and the Terrace Bay News we would like to thank Glen for the fine job he did in "writing up" our Superiors games, ' is IRE IG: Ce PE ic a ANNUAL HOCKEY CLASSIC FRIDAY MARCH 29 ~ at 8:00 p.m, the hockey classic of the year takes place.
