Lun SPORT OF POWLING In 1910° while Tordntonian Ryan and his associates were launching Canada's five-pin game, a Pittsburgh bowler arrived at his favourite alley with a set of rubber-banded duck pins. - This game originated in Baltimore Md,, in 1903 and in 1910 the "rubber band" type of duck-pin bowling was originated in Pittsburgh, Pa, These games are now supervised by the National Duck Pir Bowling Congress, Today there are more than 250,000 adherents of the rubber~banded duck~pin game and it is rapidly becoming the most popular game in Quebec as well as elsewhere in Eastern Canada, A half-century ago New Englander John J, Monsey devised his own game with tall, thin pins dubbed "candle-pins", This form of bowling was slowly accepted through- out the New England states and in the Mar- itime provinces, While the sport of bowling is certainly a top favourite of adults, it is rapidly becoming a favourite indoor pastime for boys and giris, In 1953 more than 50,000 youngsters, boys and girls, participated in sanctioned leagues, under the supervision of the American Junior Bowling Congress and some 1,600 teams of teenagers took part in the annual "Mailographic" tournament in 1954. -Also, in Western Canada, they have a high school championship. Prizes were awarded in speckled trout, lake trout and northern pike divisions and were won as follows: Speckled Trout - lst - Don Fedun 23 lbs, 2nd - Archie Heinrich , 2 lbs. Robert Nelson 103 lbs, 2nd - Norman Vezina 8 lbs. - lst - Eddie Kenney 13. lbs, 2nd - Bob Semeniuk Jd. IDSs The awards were presented by Mr. Bert McGooey Chief Forest Ranger from Pays Plat and by Mr, Ken McLeod from the Terrace Bay Conservation Club, Both of these gentlemen spoke of the great import- ance which conservation must have in order to preserve the soil, forest and water resources for the. future, Bob Hales, Kiwanis Chairman of Agriculture and Conservation chaired the presentation part of the meeting and Bob thanked all those who had taken part and especially Ralph Lindberg for his work in weighing the fish, Bob pointed out that 14 more fish had been entered this year over last year which showed the popularity of fishing among the young people. The Kiwanis meeting was called to order by President Des Evans-Smith and in addition to the guests mentioned above Thad Epps from Neenah was present as a guest of one of the members.
