RECREATION FLYER (Cont. ) 'a TERRACE BAY RECREATION REPORT FOR THE YEAR az is to train and develop our own leaders in the community for such jobs as play- _ ground directors and leaders, coaches, etc, The old trend for recreation was towards the sporting and physical field, which left in many small communities only hockey, baseball or softball. Today throughout Canada, most directors are trying to encourage people, old and young, to take part in different activities | which require more brains than muscle, rf ' With a little encouragement and pushing, -these activities such as art clubs, basket- ball, figure skating, square dancing, musical appreciation and music groups can function when the opportunity is there and the group are given direction. We also are trying to encourage more opportunity for the female group in our programme, Often in our work with the males - who are heard a lot - the women are overlooked, I give considerable thanks to our Rec- reationCommittee, consisting of 6 men and 1 lady, who have been very willing to help whenever called upon. We are fortunate indeed to have such a fine committee as this. It is quite true that there are times when a director and a committee do not always think along the same lines, but for the number of times when the committee members help out the other side is cancelled Off, In the future, we have plans to carry on and improve our present programme, and to make the maximum use of all our facilities during the winter and summer, although the facilities during the winter' especially are in use as much as possible, We hope to improve and beautify our children's Tot Lots and park areas, and ball- field, Our one big summer activity - which to every child is a real joy - is swimming. We hope that this year (weather permitting) we may be able to encourage more children. to come out to our beach and learn to swim, We constahtly hit the big draw-back to swimmers in the extremely cold water of Lake Superior, The main and most important objective is to assist in building better citizens for the future so that they may be better fitted to play their part in world affairs, Respectfully submitted, James H, Fraser, Director of Recreation. 0-0-0 Page7 | HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY NEWS AND NOTES i The next general meeting of the Society will be held on Friday, June 15th at 8:00 pem. The best method is by spraying with a weed killer, but digging them out or even just hoeing them out helps to control them, Now is the time to clean them out of your front and back yards and in the parking area between the lawn and the road.
