Page 11 } TERRACE BAY RECREATION REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1955 (Cont. from Last Week) TENNIS We are very proud of ow results from re-forming a tennis club, in which were en- rolled some 58 members last year. This was set up and organized by an elected committee, Interest was so great that inter-town com- petition was started, and indoor tennis was played for the first time on the terrazo floor of the Arena, This helps out in planning competitions as it allows us to play on rainy days and evenings. There was for the first time a highly-skilled and pro-~ fessional tennis team from the Lakehead visiting Terrace Bay to put on an exhibition geme for the people, Tennis now has a strong place in our programme, ROLLER SKATING We had our initiation into roller skating in the summer months last year. We purchased over 250 skates, varying in sizes, This activity was operated three nights a week and was a highly recognized activity. As the summer passed, interest dropped but next summer we again hope to see many enjoying this form of recreation. PLAYGROUND We had a large enrolment of children from 4 to 13 years of age in this programme, which consisted of crafts, sports and swimming. Last season we operated our playground with a director (a local lady) with a 19-year old girl assistant. Both these people were sent to a Summer Play- ground Leaders! Training Course before our 2-months! activity took place. Statistics show that over 200 children registered in our playground programme, The average attendance for the eight weeks was 150 children per day, which was less than $1,00 per capita. We found from last year's experience that in order to function properly and 'to allow the boys to participate, there should be a young man employed, along with one female employee, as supervisory staff, The pro- gramme scheduled 2 special activity each week, in which the children were very keenly interested.
