ICH CHIPS After a long Summer wait approximately 400 faithful hockey fans turned out at the Local arena Last Thursday evening to see our "Superiors" take to the ice in their first preseason drill, The team iced many new faces and these along with some of the "OLD TIMERS" were put through a very tough first: - practice session that lasted- 2-1/2 hours and at the end of which the fans that lined the rails must have been convinced that-we will have a more balanced team this year and possibly a little stronger one, Since that first evening, we have had two scrimmage practices, with a turn- out sach time of approximately 18 men, Hach time the girind becomes harder and harder as they regain their skating legs and * OOM" around the ice issuing "Bone Crunching" Blocks to everyone in their vath, The casualty list at present is snall, but it may rise as the contesting players fighting for positions on the team give their all in order to attain that status. The forward lines look a little more balanced this year with a goodly reserve power on the bench, The defence for the first time in many years will be paired off with a loft handed and a right handed player, this department too has reserve power on the bench, The goal tending spot is being contested by two able young men and it looks like we may see a "Battle for the Pipes" be- fore the opening whistle blows} The season i5 still a long way off and the Practice Road is becoming tougher with practices called for Monday and Thursday evenings - Tuesday and Friday mornings plus. ihat other available ice ' time that can be arranged, The new coach seems to be a "task master" and looks as if he may be able to ice a balanced and conditioned team by the time our '55-56 season gets under- Nay With exhibition games slated for (Cont, on next col,) 'BOWLING Page 6 ICE CHIPS (Cont,.) ; this month, November 13th-20th- 27th we all wilk-have the- opportunity to see "JUR_ TEAM" in action against the league champion "Marathon Mercurys" and against our old "Arch Rivals" Schreiber Diesels (now under new management!). These games will be playéd on a Round Robin Basis with Terrace and Schreiber open- ing on November 13th. On November 20th . Marathon and Schreiber will meet héad on, and on November 27th - Terrace Bay will meet Marathon and may this game be played as a game of Hockey in our prone, instead of turning out like a "Sports | Day in the Old Roman Arenas}" No matter what the outcome is in these two games we Still have a long row to hoe before the season ends} May we have a successful year and may our choices of. players be good ones} GET BEHIND THE TEAM ALL THE WAY? For a fee of 10¢ a player, or 50¢ a team we become eligible to participate in Lakehead Tournaments, and corpete for thei individual trophies for High Average, High Three, and High Single. games bowled in regular League play. As the Lakehead Association is in turn affilinted with the Western Canada Five Pin Association, this also. means that any perfect single game or three games of 1000 or better will be recognized by then, without our association having to put out "the high annual fee that membership direct with the W.C.F.P.B.A, would entail. The Western Canada Championships were held in Winnipeg last year and the Lakehead entered teams in all events, . The first event is for Mixed teams for the Gibson Trophy, This is to be rolled off on November 26th at Gibson's, Port Arthur, Qualifying week is November 6th to 12th, (Cont. on page 7)
