MEN'S CHORUS AT BIG SING' . i On April 30th, Terrace Bay Men's Chorus joined seven other male choruses in their Annual "Sing" in Rochester, Minn., _ This event is sponsored each year by one of the member choruses in the Upper Midwest District of the Associated Male Choruses of America, In addition to choruses from Minnesota and western Wisconsin, the dist- rict includes the two Canadian groups, the Fort William Male Choir and the Terrace Bay Men's Chorus, Last year the Terrace Bay group was not a member of AMC, but at- tended the Sing in Fort William as a guest chorus, This year's "Sing" was held in the Mayo Memorial Civic Auditorium. Each chorus sang one or two solo numbers, after which the conductor of that chorus led the massed choruses in a number, The. Terrace Bay chorus sang "0, God Our Help in Ages Past" as a solo number and con- ductor Bert Lohr led the eight choruses in "Salvation Belongeth to Our God", Mrs. Stan Hodgkiss accompanied both numbers. The program ended with the Singing of "God Save the Queen" and "The Star Spangled Banner" by the massed choruses, As usual, the "Sing" was followed by an "Afterglow", Each chorus provided some part of the informal entertainment, singing novelty numbers, tap dancing, etc, In addition, every afterglow sees a good deal of singing of "Barbershop" variety and the favorites of past years. It gives members of the various choruses a chance to visit with friends from other groups, many of whom they haven't seen since the previous "Sing", A lunch and coffee ended the afterglow, Nineteen chorus members, plus Mrs, Hodgkiss, Bert Lohr, and five wives made the trip in six cars. The chorus paid for a part of the gas and oil for the cars, but all the expenses were borne by the chorus members, They hope that receipts from the annual concert on next May 20th will help pay some of the expenses for next years Sing. In addition a concert has been arranged in Marathon on May 29th, under the sponsorship of the Women's Auxiliary of St. John's Trinity Church, Four of the chorus members came home on Sunday, May lst, The rest journey- ed to Cadott, Wisconsin. In this town of about 1000 population, they joined choruses from Throp, Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Chippewa Falls, Wis., (Cont. on next col,) Page 5 % MEN'S CHORUS AT BIG SING (Cont.) and Fort William in«a concert. Each chorus sang two or three solos, and joined to- gethér to sing six massed numbers, Here the Terrace Bay chorus sang "Onward Christian Soldiers" and "Hunters Moon", in addition to repeating the solo which they' sang in Rochester, A very pleasant afterglow rounded out the evening. Chorus members from. Hau Claire and Chippewa Falls billeted the Terrace Bay people in their various homes Sunday night. The group returned on Monday~--tired, pretty well sung out, but eager to relate what a good time they had and already laying plans to attend the next "Sing", { EDITORS NOTE: As an indication of the mutual enjoyment and respect received and extended by the Terrace Bay Men's Chorus the following letter as received from the publisher of the Sentinel Publishing Co, of Cadott, Wisconsin is reprinted below: Mayor Terrace Bay Ontario, Canada Se ee ate ee tte re mr Dear: Sir; I am writing to you in hopes that you might convey, perhaps publicly, the appreciation of myself and this community to the directors, officers, and members of the Terrace Bay Men's Chorus, who appeared her last Sunday night, Their part of the program contributed measurably to the success of the evening, which the citizens of Cadott and surrounding area considered a signal honor and rare opportunity. This was made especially true because of the appearance of the Terrace Bay Chorus and another Ontario group from Fort William, You and your citizens can well be proud of the chorus representing Terrace Bay and we hope their efforts, both as songsters and emissaries of good will, are not overlooked, Sincerely, WALTER H.
