May lith-12th FORBIDDEN starring Tony Curtis, Joanne Dru and Lyle Bettger, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AMATEUR SHOW HUGE SUCCESS Upwards of 450 children and adults gathered at the Terrace Bay High School Auditorium on Friday evening, April 29th, to witness a highly enjoyable Amateur Show sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in the district. The show, restricted to Elementary and High School students of the district saw contestants from Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Rossport taking part with a total of 29 entries in the Elementary group and 6 in the High School. Entries ranged from Singing and Piano Soloists to a nine- member rendition of the "Shooting of Dan McGrew", Duets, Trios and Quartets were interspersed in the 2 hour programme, ' With Mr, Geno Caccamo as an accomp- lished Master-of-Ceremonies the show got underway with a singing solo by 6 year old Susan Caldwell of the Schreiber Public School singing "Open Up Your Heart", Her rendition set the pattern for the night and indicated that competition would be keen for the many valuable prizes given away e The remaining entires in the Element- ary School division followed with the judges having a difficult time to decide the best acts from the many varied and delightful numbers presented, A tie for first place in this division resulted between Maria and Paul Cebrario of the Schreiber Separate School, Maria, 13 years old, and her brother Paul, di, years ld, both' entered as piano soloists and. rendered such an excellent acount of themselves that the judges were forced to declare a draw, Maria's selection was Sonatina" while Paul played "Rondo", Duplicate prizes of Kodak Brownie Cameras were presented to these two, Second place was won by Susan (Cont. on next col,) KNIGHT OF COLUMBUS AMATEUR SHOW (Cont. ) rage. 5 Caldwell and for her:endearing effort was rewarded with a 3-piece matched Dresser Set (just like Mom's) consisting of a silver plated hair brush, mirror and comb all in an attractive and lasting gift box, Third place, and with it a complete Camera and Flash Attachment Kit, was awarded to a 7 year old duet consisting ' of Linda Merrit and Gordon Moorey of the Schreiber Separate School, Theirs was a Recitation entitled "See How Well I Speli" and the large crowd applauded vigorously when these two neatly dressed, fresh looking, youngsters completed their number. Fourth place went to 12 year old Lila Petrus of the Terrace Bay Separate School for her spark- ling performance as an Accordian Soloist, Her number consisted of a medley of tunes - "Clementine" - "Rubin and Rachel" and the "Accidental Waltz", She showed great promise after only 3 months of lessons. Fifth and final award in this division was made to a singing duet of David Chopty, aged 12, and Vincent McInnes, aged 13, of the Terrace Bay Separate School who chose a "black~face" number entitled "Old Black Joe", Attractively gift-wrapped chocolates proved to be popular prizes for the fourth and fifth place winners, In addition each contestant was presented with a Ball-Point Pen, or Pencil, as they came off the stage, In the High School division first place honours, and what later proved to be the judges unanimous choice for the Grand Award, went to a sister and brother team 2f Donna and David Lohr of Terrace Bay who sang "Melody of Love" in a heart- warming and fully talented manner. Per- fectly poised and confident, they exhibited a degree of skill uncommon for "Amateurs"! and but for the lengthy prograime would have come back for an encore, Handsome genuine leather wallets were presented to each, Probably the most uproarious event of the evening and there were many, was the excellent portrayal of that epic of the Far North - "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" by a cast of nine Terrace Bay High School Boys. With Richard Marcella as 'Dangerous Dan', Terry McInnes as offstage narrator and Vince Kenney as sound effects technician, the curtain opened to a realistic setting of the famous barroom scene, "The Lady named Lou" was effectively portrayed by Ronnie McKay while the role of the non- descript Stranger was carried out by Albert McLeod, Others in the cast were Joseph Marcella, Johnny Boudreau, Danny Kenney and Brian Harvey.
