f BROTHERHOOD BANQUET A SUCCESS On Wednesday evening, February 23rd, some 65 men from Terrace Bay, Schreiber and environs gathered at the Hotel Terrace amid an air of congeniality and good fellowship to observe, collectively, Brotherhood Week, Included in the gathering were men from all walks of life, of various religious beliefs but with one purpose of mind - to promote, encourage and support tolerance in our everyday relations with our neighbours, With Mr. C. N. Bentham, as Chairman proceedings got underway with the sining of "O Canada" with Mrs, Ellen Hodgkiss accompanying on the piano, who provided an appropriate background of dinner music during the banquet, Guest Speaker for the evening was Mr, Saul Laskin of Port Arthur, prominent business man of that city, a Past Pres- ident of Rotary, President of the Port Arthur Red Cross but overall a forceful and eloquent speaker, Mr, Laskin has been a keen supporter of BROTHERHOOD promotion and this fact was brought home to the gathering in his talk which was delivered in a sincere and genuine manner, He referred a number of times to the writings of great men in the past - Hebrew, Catholic and Protestant - written centuries ago, but which have proven true down through the ages. Observing that fully eight organizations were sponsoring Brotherhood Week locally, he remarked that the very essence of Brotherhood was being demonstrated and which in itself was unique in his ex- periences. "We are told that in Unity there is strength", he remarked "but let me point out to you that throughout history nations have grown strong and respected only when they included in their democratic structure a diversity of tongue, of expression, of religious and cultural practices, and a monumental proof of this is our own country ~ Canada - which even now is emerging as one of the world's greatest countries, deeply res- _ pected and the envy of oppressed in every corner of the globe", Mr. J. Judge of Schreiber thanked the speaker at the conclusion of his address, Special guests of the Brotherhood Committee were Miss Rita Vezina and Allan Nelson who were finalists in the Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Committee, Mr. Nelson, as winner, was presented with the E,S.1.S.S, Trophy (Cont, on next col.) Riddell, Principal of the Schreiber Continuation School made the presentations and in addition read out the winning Essay submitted by Miss Carol LaLonde of Holy Angels Separate School of Schreiber. A Camera, complete with Flash Attachment and supplies was the prize for the Essay winhsr and merchandise vouchers went to Joey Wig of St. Martin's School, Terrace Bay, and Neil Whent of the Schreiber Public School, whose essays received honorable mention. MARTIN'S SCHOOL _ Our schools are what we make them, Times and schools in Ontario have changed from the little red school house of earlier days. Today multiplication tables have a meaning. Reading has become an adventure. Secial Studies is a living thing. The minds of our children are trained for the responsibilities and citizenship and love of God, loyalty to their Community, Pro- vince and Country. But the one thing remains the same - our schools are what we make them, The objective outlined above requires the CONSTANT co-operation of home, church and the school, Thus this year's Education Week's motto, "Education is Everybody's Business", is most fitting, In order that the general public may visit our school and teachers, we are having Open House on March 4th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to attend and pupils will be given a detailed programme next week, 0-0-0 NORTH SHORE HOCKEY NEWS (Cont.)
