The latest annual statement from the Plan for Hospital Care reveals that hospi- tal treatment has risen so greatly in cost in the last three years that payments made by the Blue Cross plan for hospital care per subscriber in 1949 were double the figure at the end of 1946. Nearly $12,000,000 was paid out on behalf of members last year, due to the increase jn the number of persons entering hospital for treatment and a sharp jump in the cost ef the treatment. Total paid out since the plan began in 1941 is $28,000,000; and more than 40 per cent of this went out in 1949. To offset the situation in 1947 and 1948, when subscriptions were not sufficient to cover payments, the plan has set aside a reserve, which now stands at $1,698,144, for the protection of subscribers. Blue Gross now brings hospital care to one in three residents of Ontario, says the report. It has no shareholders and does not attempt to maintain reserves beyond those necessary to protect members. Operating expenses accounted for nine per cent of the dollar and nine per cent went to reserves. The remaining 82 per cent went for hospital care. 0-0-0 COMMUNITY CHURCH COLUMN Next Sunday, May 7th, Rev. A. F.
