There are five espns dangerous | public enemies that need to be cornered and put out ef action for good. These public enemies we speak of are not men, They are wrong ideas ond murderous belicfs, and they are guilty of a great toll of life and limb, They make the prevention of acci- dents very difficult. : Ned H. Vearborn, president of the National Safety Council, lists these five mur= -- derous beliefs as the enemics of human safety and urges everyone to help get rid of thom. They cause all kinds of accidents - including industrial accidents. 1. The "Other Fellow" Idea ~- Why is it thet so many pcople think an accident can only happen to the other guy? Do they think they're smarter or luckier than others? Or do they just think they're so precious Fate wouldn't dare let them be hurt? Any such ideas are silly. Never forget that an accident could happen to you, and it's up to YOU to see that it doesn't, 2. The "Your Number's Up! Idea = An amazing number of people say that "when it's your time, you'll get it, no matter what you do," That's one way to "get it" sooner -- thinking that way. This kind of attitude is often just an excuse for being careless. ind if the idea were true, it would be useless to have signs and safeguards in the plant or on the roads and streets, and we could just ignore those fire and fall hazards in our homes. This idea makes no sense at all. 3. The "Law of Averages" Idea - Those who think that a certain number of people must be hurt and killed, according to the "law of averages,' are standing in the way of accident prevention, Statistics show that rure chance plays a very small part in accident tragedy. 4, The "Price of Progress" Idea + Some felks who don't think very deeply about the matter will tell you that accidents are part of the price we pay for scientific pro- gress and the complexity cd modern life. But if they'd think a little more about it, they might realize that the same type of human intelligence which brings progress can also defea at accidents. No, accidents are not the price we pay for human progress. They are the price'we pay for failure to keep up with progress individually in our thoughts and ac- tions. 5. The "Spirit of 176" Tdea ~ It's usually the "tough" guy who contends that the pioneers of our country took sreat risks, so we should, too, Safety is sissy, growls Mr, Hard-boiled - and where would we be if our forefathers had been sissies? The answer is thet they were not sissies, but they were not fools, either. It's hard to imagine one of them sticking 4is head out of a stockade on a dare while the Indians were waiting for just such a pot shot. And nowadays there is nothing smart or manly about turning a motor vehicle into a murder weapon, We should look closer to home for the causes of accidents. WE SHOULD LOOK WITHIN OUR OWN MINDS.
