The new Mill Manager of LongLuc Pulp and Paper Company, Don Porter, arrived at Terrace Bay with his family on Saturday July 17th. With the arrival of Mr. Porter, it will be of interest to all to note that he assumes his new responsibilities with a background of 20 years experience in the Kimberly-Clark organization, Donald C. Porter was born at Anoka, Minnesota - 20 miles north of Minneapolis on the Mississippi River. His parents were of English descent. He attended public school at Eau Claire and LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and completed High School at LaCrosse. In 1928 Don Porter graduated from Marquette University as a Chemical Engineer with the degree of Ch. E. Following graduation he immediately joined Kimberly-Clark Corporation and spent his first three years with the organization at Niagara, Wisconsin. By 1936 he had risen to Sulphite Superintendent at the Kimberly, Wisconsin mill of Kimberly-Clark and by 1941 was Pulp Mill Superintendent of Groundwood and Sulphite in the some mill. In 1944 Don moved to the Staff Pulp Department at Kimberly-Clark!'s Head Office in Neenah, Wisconsin and by 1947 was Assistant Chief Mill Manager under Fred Seaborne, a position which he held until his transfer to Terrace Bay. In 1931 Don Porter married Harriette Krieckhaus at Minneapolis. The Porters have three children: Jane - 11, Lynn ~ 8, and Ann - 6, Don's chief hobbies are fishing and hunting - preferably duck hunting. When asked for any comments he would like to make concerning his arrival here Don Porter stated thet he and his family were very much impressed with the community and certainly expected to thorough- ly enjoy living at Terrace Bay. Before 300 workmen and 13 bulldozers had brought the fire under control, it had spread to within half a mile of the settlement. It is reported that a slight increase in the wind at the time would have brought devastating results to a greater part of the project. We should all learn a lesson from the fact that the fire is believed to have been started by a lighted match carelessly thrown away by a workman.
