WHO'S WHO AROUND THE JOB 3 July 1947 p 3 R.P. "Dick Rigby" - Superintendent, Ontario Construction Company This week, our who's who spotlight falls on the smiling face of genial R.P. "Dick Rigby", Superintendent of Ontario Construction Company, the contractors responsible for much of the work which has contributed to the present well-developed status of our Townsite. Dick (who has been around the Terrace Bay project since back in June, 1946, when Ontario started to dig sewer and water lines and pour concrete basements for our houses) is a product of Southern Ontario's thriving metropolis, St. Catharines, where he first saw the light of day. It's quite natural that Kick Rigby should be in the construction business. His grandfather built the first tube (underground subway) from Waterloo to Picidilly in London, England. Dick's father started a Canadian Branch of his father's English construction business before the first great war and since that time, Ontario Construction Company Limited has forged steadily ahead. They have the honour of having removed the first shovel load of earth back in the early '20s from what is now the famous Welland Ship Canal which connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. During the Second Great War, Ontario Construction built a number of large airports. They were also responsible for the building of the Townsite of Marathon, our neighbours to the east. Aside from Dick, two other brothers, Tom and John, are also associated with their father in the operation of Ontario Construction Company Limited; so, it s a family enterprise. Dick married Ann Merrit Seymour of St. Catherines in 1939 and the Rigbys have two youngsters, Timothy "Pim", aged 7 years, and Robin, aged 9 months. The Rigbys are Terrace Bay residents. In the field of hobbys, Dick's prime interest is sports of all kinds (although he admits that at one stage of his life, he was a budding lepidopterist, which reduced to simple language simply means a collector of moths and butterflies). Apart from the fact that Dick Rigby is the Superintendent of Ontario Construction Company here at Terrace Bay, he will also be long remembered as the first President of the Terrace Bay Softball Association.
