Oakville North-Bur- lington MP Pam Damoff and Oakville MP Anita Anand made the funding announcement at the Six- teen Mile Sports Complex on Wednesday, July 6. The money is being pro- vided through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Onta- rio (FedDev Ontario), un- der the Canada Communi- ty Revitalization Fund (CCRF). The investments are in- tended to help enhance community infrastructure and adapt public spaces to support the local economy and the quality of life for residents and visitors in Oakville. The Town submitted four projects for funding consideration and all were approved. As a result: • $86,800 will support the installation of an all-sea- son, multi-use sports court at George Savage Park that can convert from a basket- ball court to a ball hockey surface, then to a skating rink during the winter months. • $656,250 was approved to construct a full-size cricket field at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Town staff have said the field will be utilized by the Oakville Cricket Club for games and practices. They also noted the field will be able to host local and regional tourna- ments, attracting visitors from neighbouring com- munities. • $750,000 was approved for the revitalization of Wal- lace Park. This revitaliza- tion is intended to make it a multi-faceted and year- round park catering to the needs of the local communi- ty. The project includes the purchase and installation of playground equipment and a basketball court, shade structures, seating areas and greenery. • $525,000 will improve a 3.7 km multi-use trail along Upper Middle Road be- tween Sixth Line and Josh- ua's Creek Drive. The up- grade is intended to im- prove mobility options and increase the level of safety for walking and cycling. "Inclusive, accessible gathering spaces are the heart of any community, and vital to healthy, vi- brant, safe and successful communities that are bet- ter equipped to restore growth, create jobs, build a greener, more competitive and resilient economy and repair the damage done by the pandemic," said Da- moff. "These investments in North Oakville through the CCRF will ensure resi- dents have access to activ- ities that are safe and ac- cessible." Anand said the federal government is pleased to support and enhance local infrastructure with the CCRF. She noted that through this fund, the government is enabling communities to build safe spaces that pro- mote physical activity, in- crease social interaction, create jobs and drive eco- nomic growth. News of the more than $2 million investment was well-received by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Oakville council has been expanding our trail system and our indoor and outdoor community facili- ties to address the growing demand from our resi- dents," he said. "It's nice to be able to partner with our local MPs and the federal government to enhance our community infrastruc- ture and offer even more amenities that contribute to Oakville's livability." Zain Khot, president of the Oakville Cricket Club, said his association is hap- py that it will soon have a dedicated cricket field that it can call its own. "With Oakville growing exponentially, we see a huge rise in interest for cricket among other sports," said Knot. "This new field will give our club and our associa- tion the opportunity to host national events and bring the spotlight to our amazing town of Oakville." Damoff said the Govern- ment of Canada is deliver- ing almost $139 million through the CCRF to sup- port communities across southern Ontario.
