Pulling up to the course with enough time to hit a few balls from the range can have us feeling limber -- but it doesn't necessarily offer us the exercise need- ed to keep the ball out of the rough. Playing golf is a great way to enjoy low-impact exercise. And given it's a competitive and social sport, it has most of us looking at ways to play a smarter, better round. Adding a simple stretch- ing routine can help us hit the ball a little longer. Stretching not only offers us flexibility in our move- ments, but it can also in- crease our performance. And who doesn't want to shave a few strokes off their game? So how do we get in the game without the pain this year? Head to the course a little early and start the day with a warm-up -- five to 10 minutes of light activ- ity like walking around the practice tee or to and from the range to the club house. Next, we want to find a place to stretch. A routine of three to five simple movements, the stretches should be gentle without the bounce; if you feel pain in the extension - know you've stretched too far. Here are a few easy stretching techniques that can help you get into the groove before walking up to the green. Side-bending: • Stand with feet shoul- der-width apart. • Hold the golf club above your head with your arms straight. • Slowly bend to one side - without rotating your hips, until you feel a stretch along the side of your back. • Hold for 30 seconds and repeat twice on each side. Quad-stretch: • Using a golf club for balance, bend your right knee and hold your right foot with your right hand. Keep your thighs together, and keep your right knee pointed towards the ground. • Pull your abdominal muscles in and maintain a straight back. • Hold for 30 seconds and repeat two times on each side. Forearm-stretch: • With your arm straight out in front of you and plan facing upward, gently pull your fingers back with your other hand. Don't let your shoulder rise up. • Next, with your arm straight out in front of you and your palm facing down - point your hand to the ground. Gently pull the back of your hand toward you with your other hand. • Hold each position for 30 seconds and repeat with your other arm. Knee-to-chest stretch: • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. • Using both hands, pull one knee into your chest. • Hold for 30 seconds. • Repeat with the other knee. Shoulder-stretch: • Hold the shaft of a golf club vertically behind your back. • Gently pull the club up with your top hand until you feel a slight stretch in the shoulder of your lower arm. Hold for 30 seconds. • Gently pull the club down with your bottom hand until you feel a stretch in the top shoulder and arm. Hold for 30 seconds • Reverse hand positions and repeat. Whether hitting the green this weekend or find- ing yourself on the course during a working lunch, taking a moment to stretch before walking up to that first tee could be the differ- ence between a hero or a hack this season.
