"Flight for Hope," a pro- ject he initiated, combines his passion for flying with a noble cause -- providing a safe place for struggling single-parent families. Affordable housing is "a big, big issue for every- body," Wallace said. He aims to raise $1 mil- lion for not-for-profit Home Suite Hope as a seed funding to build its own multi-unit dwelling. It was in his line of work in real estate that the 27- year-old first learned about what the Oakville-based organization is doing to support low-income, sin- gle-parent families across Halton, lifting them from poverty to stability by pro- viding wraparound hous- ing services that include child care and post-second- ary education for the par- ents. The fundraiser cam- paign was kicked off on Sunday (June 25) at the Burlington Executive Air- park Airport, as the start- ing and finishing points of the three-month round- the-world journey. He plans to take off on May 23, 2023, in a modified V35B Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft. According to him, only about 140 people -- three of whom were Cana- dians -- have flown solo across the globe in a single- engine aircraft. The planned routes will have him fly east from Can- ada and make stops in 26 or so countries, traversing Europe, Africa and Asia and island hopping along Pacific Island nations. The longest stretch will be a 15- hour flight from Hawaii to California. "You're off radar. Air traffic control probably won't be able to see me un- til I'm two hours off the coast of California. So chal- lenges like that, it's a lot of mental energy on long-dis- tance flying like that," he said. Along with scheduled navigation upgrades, his plane will be retrofitted with up to five fuel tanks -- three more than the regu- lar -- that can hold 230 gal- lons of fuel, allowing him to nearly triple the flight range. Weather will also play a factor, because unlike big planes, which he said fly at 40,000 feet, a smaller air- plane can't go over 15,000 feet. This means he won't be able to fly through storms and will have to go around them instead. By taking on the chal- lenges, he hopes to show to others that "you can go out there and do something you love but do it for some- body else. It's a win-win."
