Mayor Rob Burton and council held a ground- breaking ceremony at the site, just north of Neyaga- wa Boulevard and Dundas Street, on Monday, June 27. Construction of the new community park is expec- ted to be done in 2023, fol- lowed by the community centre and library in 2024. "Council and I are excit- ed that the next phase of the community park por- tion of the future commu- nity centre, library, and park in north Oakville is beginning and that resi- dents will be able to enjoy the outdoor spaces next year," said Burton in a press release. "We remain committed to delivering the pro- grams, services, and facil- ities that residents need to live, play and work." Town staff said the ex- panded community park and outdoor spaces will feature two additional lit sports fields (one with ar- tificial turf), a cricket field, a skateboard park, a bike pump track, a splash pad, a children's play- ground, a field house and a washroom facility. The community centre and library will connect to the existing Sixteen Mile Sports Complex and will feature flexible, multi-use spaces offering a variety of programs and services for all ages and abilities. Construction on the next phase of the commu- nity park is scheduled to begin in July, while con- struction on the communi- ty centre and library is scheduled to begin this fall or spring 2023. The 65,000-square-foot community centre will feature aquatic facilities, a fitness/active living cen- tre, flexible multi-use space to accommodate se- niors, youth and cultural programming and gymna- siums. The 18,000-square-foot Oakville Public Library branch will offer work and study spaces (including col- laboration spaces), a cre- ation and media zone, read- ing and conversation areas, children's spaces, flexible programming spaces as well as public computers and Wi-Fi access. The project is estimated to cost nearly $106.1 mil- lion. The Town of Oakville continues to seek public input on preferred recre- ation, culture, and library programs and services planned for the future community centre and li- brary in north Oakville.
