Thursday, April 27, 1950 Don's Demons Romp Through First Session Brown as a nut and twice as crackly, Don Davis lost little time on his return from a Flori- da vacation in rallying his Oaks for the year's initial workout Sunday' afternoon. And its safe to say that the booming baritone of the busy mentor will be heard exhorting his charges to more arduous efforts every weekend from this point on. Although the candidates who loped around Wallace park for a limbering up session naturally didn't exert themselves unduly during this first sortie, they did show all the enthusiaism inher- ent in ball players who have just dug the old mitt out of winter moth balls. Several old faces could be noted in both infield and outfield, while a sprinkling of last season's juveniles seeking berths and a couple of new hurl- ing prospects were on hand. Holdovers included , Hank Gal- braith, Paul Gilliam, Kenny Pol- lock, Ben Languay Johnny Turner, and Alex Wollons, while even evergreen Cliff Post turned up to shag a few flies. And then, of course, there was the Wen- achee Terror, Georgie Havill, Who is a park fixture. Twirling candidates who will seek mound staff assignments in support of Manager Al Yarnell and Mark Pollock are Frankie May, a Burlington righthander, and Doug Pierce, a product of London sandlots who has a bank job in nearby Cooksville, May looked particularly promising, Davis reports. Juves who have a good chance to grab spots on the club are Kenny Brown, Jim Cowan, Mor- rison and Bobby Hooper. The lat- ter wasn't out Sunday, but will be on hand shortly, once his Varsity exams are out of the way. Old standbys like Norm Carter, Doug Wilson and Mark Pollock will be out soon, too. Davis and Yarnell are partic- ularly pleased over Ray Patter- son's decision to play his base- ball hereabouts this summer. Ray will add considerable power to the Oaks attack, while his backstopping capabilities will be a big help in bolstering the squad. He'll be donning the mask and decker at the next workout. TIME FOR TROUT Indication thal Halton will continue to provide good sport for enthusiastic anglers was con- tained this week In Game War- den Dudley Hitehcox' announce- ment that he is expecting a ship- ment of some 20,000 eight and nine inch speckled and brown trout yearlings. The finny bat- tlers will quickly find their way into county streams upon arrival from the govt. hatchery. "It looks like a good season is in prospect," opined Dudley. Heo asks that anglers co-operate by tossing back all fish under seven inches. The trout season, of course, will open Saturday-- and judging by the run on sup- plies noted by town purveyors of baits, plugs, rods and reels, it would seem that few of Mr. Wal- ton's local disciples will miss flipping out a line on that par ticular day. vard your @ Generally speaking, anything you own may. be replaced--anything except your health.
