Who wants. to buy water- melons!" It was rather a warm day and Knarf and Hanid both suddenly felt quite thirsty. As soon as Wil- ly mentioned the word watermel- on it seemed that nothing in the world would quench their thirst so well as a slice of it. "Come on! Let's get some!" Knarf shouted as he helped Han- id to her feet. They both climbed over the garden wall and dropped down on the other side, for it was from there that Willy's voice was coming. They could still hear him calling: "Who wants to buy wat- ermelons! Big, beautiful water- melons!" Finally they spied him leaning against the trunk of a tree at the end of the meadow. They ran over to him. "Watermelons! Who wants to buy wa--Oh, hello!" Willy said as Knarf and Hanid came up. "All right, Willy," said Knarf, "We'll take some." A Big Slice "One slice apiece, Willy," said Hanid. "And be sure to make it a big slice. Well, where are they ?" "They?" asked Willy, leaning off the tree and looking at Knarf and Hanid. "The ones you are selling," said Knarf. "The ones you're calling out about." "Oh those," said Willy, sound- ing very surprised. Tien he said: "I'm not selling anything. I'm just singing a song." "A song!" Knarf and Hanid ex- claimed. Willy nodded. "A song about watermelons, It goes-- Watermelons, watermelons Who wants to buy some water- melons? Tiddle-di-dum Come, come, come Is mighty nice-- Knarf and Hanid walked slow- ly back to their place under the daisy. They sat down again. Lovely and green The best that you've seen-- Suddenly Willy's song broke off and Knarf and Hanid heard him yelling--"Help! Help!" Next Instant The next instant, Willy came hopping over the garden wall at full speed, followed by a great crowd of hungry rabbits. "Cabbages! We want to buy cabbages!" they all cried, push- ing around Willy. "Where are your cabbages!" "I haven't got any. It's just a song I'm singing," moaned Willy. "Go away! Go away ..." It was all Knarf and Hanid could do to rescue Willy from the rabbits. And when at last they chased all the rabbits away, Wil- ly sank to the ground exhausted. "I guess maybe," said Hanid to that song. It just makes folks want things you haven't got." And Willy sighed and agreed that Hanid was probably right.
