[ 'Saturday, in Port Perry Firefighters battle for extrication title Auto extrication, more often than not, is a struggle between life and death and time. Firefighters race against time in an effort to free the victims of automobile accidents from the twisted wreckage. But as much as haste is impor- tant, so too is safety. One wrong move can hurt the victim as much as help. It's a delicate balancing act, requiring well-trained person- nel and specialized equipment. At Scugog Hall #1, Port Perry, a team of dedicated men have been practising auto extrication techniques for many years Their drive 10 be the best they can be has led to their participa- Hon in aulo extrication compet- tions in places throughout North America, and they've garnered a name for themselves as one of the best teams in the business. But this weekend they won't get a chance to compete, because they're playing host to the first- ever Durham Region Auto Extnication Competition, Saturday Sept. 7, 8:30 am. to 4 p.m. in the Scugog Township parking lot on Water St. (behind the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). Opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. officially kick off-what promises . 10 be a thrilling day If you've never seen the highly skilled members of an auto extri- cation team at work, you won't AME believe how efficient these fire- fighters are, using the 'jaws of life', cribbing, air bags and all kinds of paraphernalia. In fact, some of what is now considered 'standardized' equipment evolved al auto extrication competitions. Eight teams are lined up for Saturday's competition. Captain Don Steele, one of the organizers from Hall #1, expects teams to arrive from Pickering, Mount Albert, Mariposa, Uxbridge, Newcastle, Sunderland and Scugog Hall #2, Caesarea, as well as what he calls "a surprisé team." He wouldn't elaborate on that last entry, but he did have a big grin on his face when he talked about it He's hoping for a big crowd to watch as the teams fight it out for atrophy. One by onc they are assigned a 'scenario', with dummy victims trapped inside wrecked cars. As well as being timed, the teams will be judged on many points, includ: ing how well they comfort and calm the victims. Admission is only one dollar, and includes a look at several emergency vehiclgs on display Province of 'Ontario Air Ambulance; Metropolitan Toronto Bus Ambulance and Support Vehicle; and the Ontario Fire Marshall Rescue Unit. It should be a 'bang-up' day. Don't miss it! PHILP PONTIAC - SICK LIMIT SELLDONN 1991 Fireflys & GMC Trackers REDUCED + $500.
