You still see péople throwing pop cans ip the garbage, for example, or not bothering to collect recyclables when they're at a cottage. Maybe they would take it more sériously if they knew some of the incredible statistics that follow, gleaned from a Recycling Council of Ontario '3R's Fast Facts' handout. If you would like a copy of this handout, in order to convince a stubborn friend or neighb with the installation of 'igloos' beside the municipal building on North St. in Port Perry. Now we are not limited: to the hours that the dump (pardon me - - landfill site) is open, and it doesn't take long when we're running an errand in town to drop off recyclables. In a recent conversation with staff at the Durham Recycling Centre, 1 was told that the * igloos are contributing to"a substantial increase in tonnages of recyclable materials being pro- sed. S that recycling really is vital, give me a call at 985- hing else 1 was told is that a great deal of material 3225 and I'll send you one! that is not suit- If every ® . able for the family in the environment igloos is being Metro } left by people Toronto . Hn who may not recycled janet banting know that they one news- Ao : are only - for paper a day in one year 500,000 trees would be glass, tin, plastic saved. For each tonne of newspaper recycled, 19 trees: are saved. The production of recycled paper uses 15 to 60 per cent less water than the produc- tion from virgin fibre. Every ton of steel recycled saves 1.5 tons of iron ore and 3.6 barrels of oil. Throwing away an aluminum pop can wastes as much ory as pouring out a half-filled can of from recycled mate- rials nid 95 per cent less energy than when raw materials are used. A TV set will operate for three hours on the energy saved by recycling one alu- minum can. Aren't these amazing facts? Hard to believe 'some people still refuse to get on board, isn't it? Recycling has certainly become easier recently for those of us who don't have Blue Box service, pop bottles and NEWSPapers. "Please Took carefully at the instruc- tions on the igloos, and use them properly. Those of us in the habit of dropping off old corrugated cardboard (OCC) and other materials not accepted at the igloos will, of course, still have to make an occasional stop at the landfill site. If you would like to know more about the igloo SySem, call the Igloo Recycling Hotline at 1-800-56 There's really no question oy y - ling has become absolutely essential. But let's remem- ber that we always have to keep the 3R's waste reduction hierarchy in mind. First we try Reduction -- then we try Reuse -- we only go to Recycling after we've done all we can 10 employ the first two principles.
