21 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,January 27,2022 insidehalton.com The presiding justice at a Hamilton court has set a case management date in the matter of fraud charges against Oakville Catholic school board trustee Nan- cy Guzzo after multiple no- shows and adjournments. Ontario Court of Justice Judge Daniele D'Ignazio expressed his disappoint- ment to an agent re- presenting the defence counsel in court on Jan. 18, while Guzzo herself did not appear. "It is extremely disre- spectful to the court and to the Crown that we actually had to call you in order to have your matters dealt with," said the judge. He also noted that the accused has not made a sin- gle appearance in court. "There's no designation and there's a bench war- rant to hold, and we still don't know what we are do- ing. It's quite frankly, real- ly upsetting, and I do not hesitate to say this for the record. It's upsetting and it's disrespectful," he said. Initially, the agent sought to adjourn the mat- ter for two weeks for ongo- ing resolution discussion, which the Crown objected to. The request was denied by the judge. Assistant Crown attor- ney Kimberley Rogers said that the matter is now 12 months before the courts. "I opposed further ad- journment for the purpose of yet another Crown pre- trial," she said, adding that "absolutely nothing has changed" since the first resolution meeting in April of last year. "We're just spinning our wheels here... nothing has happened in this matter." Hamilton police charged Guzzo back on Jan. 21, 2021, with 10 counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000, related to her em- ployment with the Labor- ers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), specifically in her position as assistant business man- ager for LIUNA Local 3000. The matter is due back in court for a case manage- ment hearing on Jan. 28. According to the web- site of the Ministry of the Attorney General, case management is a system designed to reduce unnec- essary delay and bring cases promptly to a just conclusion, as well as bringing cases to trial in a timely manner.
