19 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,January 6,2022 insidehalton.com Oakville loves its Moon- shine Café. The popular venue, which first opened its doors in 2006, offers an in- timate setting for patrons and performers alike: sea- soned artists and those just starting out in their musi- cal, comedic and songwrit- ing careers. Trying to sustain their small business during the pandemic has been "pretty difficult" said co-owner (along with wife Jane) John Marlatt. Although the café offers some food items, it's pri- marily an entertainment venue, so there was no piv- oting to takeout or deliv- ery. Similar to other small businesses, Moonshine was forced to shut its doors during lockdowns. Income was sporadic. Then along came Budds' Mazda which presented Marlatt with a cheque for $5,000 on Monday (Nov. 29). With the help of Canadi- an nominations and dealer partners across Canada, Mazda Canada is donating up to $1 million to support local small businesses that have been severely impact- ed by the pandemic, stated a social media post about the Mazda Local Legends holiday program, which prompted Budds' donation Moonshine is a unique place, one of a dying breed, said Budds' Mazda general manager, Mehran Arab- pour. He called Moonshine "a pillar in the local commu- nity, hosting live music from local artists." "We're very grateful" said Marlatt of Budds' ini- tiative. "Of all the businesses they could have put for- ward, it's very flattering," said Marlatt. Over a year ago, two Moonshine patrons also started a GoFundMe cam- paign to help the Marlatts, raising $75,000 "to carry us through." What touched Marlatt was the sheer number of people who donated to the fund. The overwhelming community support makes him feel "obligated to come out of this with a positive result." "You're not just letting down family and a couple of friends, you're now let- ting a whole community down," said Marlatt.
