#4 ' wp Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 30,1996-- 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To The Editor: A During the school March break, March 9th was extremely cold and raw. On this Saturday at the gntrance of the Canadian ire Store I saw a mound of clothes, which when investigated, was that of a small boy laying on the sidewalk, coat pulled up over his head and curled in a fetal position attempting to keep warm. Under all this' was a carton of chocolate bars he was attempting to sell. With the encouragement of several other shoppers we were able to convince him to enter the store vestibule where it was sheltered and much warmer. | He was adamant, stating that "they" told him he couldn't sell in the store, "they " had deliveréd him in a van with instructions to sell these chocolates for a school trip. Feeling sorry for this lad I purchased a box.of candy from him, but after leaving the store with" my three year old grandaughter, I started to get very emotional and angry at anyone dumping a child off in such inclement weather for the sole purpose of raising 'money. Reporting all this to the Durham Police I was informed by the officer on duty that they could do nothing about it and the responsibility was that of the school and parents. Oak Meadows support Tothe Editor: Wise government can create jobs and affordable homes at*. no cost to our community. As a developer since 1955 - I' always study new projects in our community, The latest in the Prince Albert area shows a slow steady availability of new building sites over the next 10 to 15 years. As Mayor Howard Hall stated - this 630. lot development will be the last major area to be developed in the Port Perry / Prince Albert communities. This averages out at ly 45 new (artificial shortages) which tighten the market place and push up the price of building lots and homes. On May 29 - Scugog Township will spend our tax dollars in an attempt to stop our development "Oak Meadows" from proceeding. It would be wonderful - if the far-sighted positive thinkers on our council would support the development of , "Oak Meadows". Their insight would help create more jobs and at the same time help to create a more itive market and homes per year. This falls well short of the past 10 year average of 124 new homes per year being built. It is shortages such as this 1 To All Our L Friends & Neighbours In the Blackstock & Port Perry Area, THANK YO $0 much for your support and friendship over the past six years. We look forward to visiting In the near future and treats and awards at our Open on May 4th, 1996, wish him a Happy 40th BIRTHDAY To the Editor; My name' is David Watts, owner of Uxbridge Tree Service. I am responding to a letter to the editor (Citizen April 23, page six) from a person upset about ps cutting a branch offia tree "in a park beside his house. The branch being 'discussed is the one I am beside in _. the "accompanying photo- graph at left. It broke in a recent ice storm and was hanging over a public pathway Investigating the box of candy I had purchased, for evidence of which school was soliciting this money, I discovered that there was nothing indicating an 'association with any school or organization. Speaking with the school caretaker I was advised to contact Bobbie Drew, trustee of the Board of Education. Mrs. Drew could do nothing until school returned, and promised to report any findings after A iring of the varjous principals. : The subsequent findings of Mrs. Drew indicated that no school was selling or collecting funds for a student trip. 1 was taken adyantage of, no doubt other citizens of the area were taken advantage of. Schools of the region have been taken advantage of, and I believe the regional police missed an opportunity to apprehend a despicable type of crime. There is a modern day "Fagan" styled organ- ization in your community, which is making a mockery of legitimate school and charitable fund raising ventures. " To this "Fagan" I am most certain that lad was on, the brink of hypo- thermia when I found him. If ever you . afe apprehended 1 will personally see that you are prosecuted to the full * extent of the law. . D. Buller, Port Perry. Contrary to the claim made by the letter writer last week, this branch would not have lived and it was a danger to the public. . When I was "roped in," up this tree,.I saw this . gentleman come running down the walkway in a very irritated manner. He shouted up to me: "How many trees are you going to cut down?" It would have been more appropriate for him to assume we weré only going to do what necessary to pake the walk-way safefind that we had the best interest of the public in mind. He. showed no respect for his fellow citizens by assuming the worst in human nature. Nobody likes to cut down trees in parks or in town. I am as.concdrned about our environment as anyone else. All my lifé I have been involved in tree care and landscaping. I also hold, a 'degree in horticulture! from the University of Guelph. In response to this irrate citizen, | jokingly shouted 'from up the tree. "The more we cut down'the more money we maké." Those who know me know that I insist on giving prompt quality work at competitive prices. I rely on happy customers repeat business an 4 referrals. Uxbridge Tree Service has served this area for 15 years and as a result has a good customer base. We only recommend work if it necessary, and always; try to save as many trees as possible.
