Byers, 15, won top awards at the Stars of the Festival Concert recently, part of the Pickering Rotary Music Festival. By Heather MeCrae Two of Scugog's finest young musicians won top awards at the Pickering * Rotary "Stars of the Festival Concert" March 3. Recognized for their achievements, Leslie Bradley, 18, and B.J. Byers, 15 came home with several awards and scholarships. Singing Ave Maria, Leslie won the Senior Vocalist's Award and also claimed the honour of being named Star of the Festival, the top prize of all musicians, whether instrumental or vocalist. Also receiving a scholarship that will pay for one-third of her university tuition this fall, the talented singer automatically received an invitation to compete in the Provincials this Spring, an event she's looking forward to. t the Stars Festival, which was in its ninth i year, playing the Grieg Concerto in A Minor, B.J. won the Senior Concerto Award and was also a recipient of a scholarship. "He amazed the audience" Leslie told the Citizen, during an interview with the two musicians at her Port Perry home. An added bonus for both was when they received the honour of an jnvitation to play with the Pickering Philharmonic Orchestra. Last weekend was a busy one for both teenagers. Performing at the Pickering Festival on Sunday, Leslie and B.J. also auditioned for the Durham Young Artists Recital on Saturday. Of the 27 people auditioning, Leslie, scored top marks throughout the Durham Region, with 90%. "This was the first time a vocalist has won; usually it's a pianist that wins" she told the Citizen. Foster students achieve excellence The following young people have achieved excellence in musicianship and performance and should be recognized for their achievements. Sonata - Pickering Rotary: BJ Byers - (83), 2nd; Concert Etude - 2nd; Concerto 15 & Under - (88), 1st. Sunderland Festival: Lauren Malyon - ARCT. (84), Leanne Holt: Piano Grade 8 Sonatina (85), 2nd; Piano Sr. Pop Class (84), 1st. Collin Meijerink: Sr. Original Composition (85), 1at; Piano Sr. Pop Class (85), 1st. B.J. also received high marks and now both have been invited to play at the Recital on March 29 in Oshawa. v "It's a real honour to be chosen to perform" they said. B.J. began his piano instruction 3 1/2 years ago under, the guidance of Bev Foster of Port Perry. In order to expand his repertoire, the grade 10 PPHS student is also studying with world renowned Russian pianist, Sergei Pavlov. Like B.J., Leslie was taught piano by Ms. Foster and the latter is her harmony teacher. "She's a great person," very intense" Leslie said. Leslie, who's just completed her Grade 9 Vocal Royal Conservatory exam, has also been taking theory and voice lessons for years with Elsie Drygala, an accomplished Scottish singer. She also coaches with Steven Hendrickson, a professional musician and associate professor at the University of Windsor who's coached about half the Phantom Of The Choir in Torgnto. Performing every: other month, their final concert this season will be at the Ford Centre of Performing Arts in Toronto. Both teenagers have set high goals for themselves. "I plan on making music my career, my life" B.J. told the Citizen, enthusiastically. Hoping to compete in the Canadian Music Competition and the Toronto Symphony Competition this May, the top prize for the latter is the golden opportunity of playing with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Leslie will be off to university this fall where she will begin taking her Bachelor of Performance in Vocal. She's also aiming to complete her teacher's degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music within the next few years. To share their love of music with family and friends, together, B.J. and Leslie are hoping to hold their own concert this summer.
